5.0 out of 5 stars Laurie Notaro rules!
I'm a 20-something who picked up my first Laurie Notaro book at a bookstore browsing the humor section. I read a chapter and laughed in the store.

2.0 out of 5 stars less funny than obnoxious
This author reminds me of the kid we all knew in high school who got a big laugh at one of her jokes and from that point on, it was "all stand up, all the time". I think the punch of her wit is watered down substantially by the fact that we see it in virtually every single line. We get it! You're funny! Now, will you please get on with the story?? I'm only halfway...

5.0 out of 5 stars Laurie Notaro rules!, February 27, 2005
This review is from: Autobiography of a Fat Bride: True Tales of a Pretend Adulthood (Paperback)
I'm a 20-something who picked up my first Laurie Notaro book at a bookstore browsing the humor section. I read a chapter and laughed in the store.

This book (as well as all Notaro's others) is consistently laugh out loud funny. I found her very relatable and easy to read. There is so much crap out there that's all too similar a read, and Notaro definitely distances herself from that. Her short chapters are a collection of humor, not another 20 or 30 something novel we've all read 80 different incarnations of.

I cannot wait for more from her. If you're a female sick of the other of the other typical girlie-novels out there, Notaro is a most refreshing change of pace. And she is totally hilarious.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book is Hilarious!!, September 2, 2003
This review is from: Autobiography of a Fat Bride: True Tales of a Pretend Adulthood (Paperback)
Wow, what an amazing writer Laurie Notaro is! Why had I never heard of her? And when can is she going to release another book? I will be first in line at the bookstore when she does!(and don't try and weasel your way in front of me either...)

Autobiography of a Fat Bride is somewhat of a mixture of a short story format and a novel. The stories all tie together, but you can read them individually and still follow along perfectly. One hilarious, short chapter follows another.

The most amazing aspect of this book is just how real it is. Laurie says things that we all laugh about behind closed doors, when the "real us" is cut loose. Embarrassing "booger jokes" and "jelly roll bellies" are thrown together with mortage horror stories and new marriages, to make an altogether perfect novel. Laurie's formula of humor and frankness makes her one of my new favorite authors! Write more, Laurie! Please.....

4.0 out of 5 stars very very funny new writer, June 26, 2004

This review is from: Autobiography of a Fat Bride: True Tales of a Pretend Adulthood (Paperback)
Notaro is a very promising new voice on the non fiction scene. This book is very funny but not quite as hilarious as her last one Idiot Girls. However that said, I read the book in a matter of days because I couldn't put it down. I kept drawing attention to myself in public places because I laughed out loud so much while reading it.

You don't need to be in the midst of planning a wedding to enjoy Notaro's sharp wit and unique observations. This is a great book to read on the beach this summer.

5.0 out of 5 stars pee-in-your-pants funny, July 30, 2003

With another fabulous cover, Laurie Notaro's second book is funnier than the first, even though I wasn't sure that was possible. Now that she's married, she's cut back on the substance abuse, but she makes the details of grown-up life just as amusing and recognizable as she did life as a single idiot girl. As with Idiot Girls, Laurie writes for the rest of us--the ones who didn't get straight A's, who didn't get asked to Prom, who try to cover our rolls of fat with huge control top underwear a la Bridget Jones. A wonderful, wonderful book.

Laurie Notaro is my hero. She has a great writing style. Her stories are hilarious. I suggest every woman who has ever struggled to fit in and do the right thing to read her books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hysterical and Relatable, March 30, 2007
This review is from: Autobiography of a Fat Bride: True Tales of a Pretend Adulthood (Paperback)
After reading this book, I had to get another one, then another one, and have since been slowly collecting Laurie Notaro's books. It was relatable, and laugh out loud funny - she has a way of writing that lets out her darkest secrets and horrible habits and most embarassing moments.

Perhaps the best part of this book is "Good Guy," wherein she discusses her absolute astonishment and severe anxiety at the thought of having found a nice, stable man to settle down with, and keeping him interested (which begins with keeping him drunk throughout their dates, and progresses to her stuffing him with fried food). Another great segment was "Time Goes By," when she's waiting for her husband to arrive home, and watches the clock while going through anger, fear, panic and repeating, only to be horribly embarassed when he gets home (I won't tell you why, but it's one of the funniest parts of the book).

While you can read the chapters as separate stories and jump around in the book, it is best read straight through - it gives you a much better idea of her world and the people in it as the book progresses.

This review is from: Autobiography of a Fat Bride: True Tales of a Pretend Adulthood (Paperback)
I found Notaro hilarious in *Autobiography of a Fat Bride*. However, at times, I felt that Notaro was overly hilarious as if she had to be funny in every sentence.

Nonetheless, I laughed while she recalled her younger days in regards to dating and men before finding the "one". And married life was not at all what she expected. Along with married life comes with duties, pets, home, housekeeping and a whole lot more. Notaro addresses just about every single thing. Notaro has a whacked sense of humor.

I'd definitely pick up another book by Notaro.

5.0 out of 5 stars Laugh Out Loud Funny, June 16, 2008

This review is from: Autobiography of a Fat Bride: True Tales of a Pretend Adulthood (Paperback)
This is my first Laurie Notaro book and it was by random fate that it got thrown into my carry-on bag while packing for a trip to the beach. I got some funny looks and even some comments about the interesting title. To be fair, most people probably overheard me laughing out loud, gasping, or shaking my head and saying "oh my gosh" because the book is so genuinely funny. I easily found myself engrossed with the whacky, loveable, relatable main character.

The book reads almost like a set of fifty or so short stories, which is perfect for those with short attention spans or if you only have a few minutes to spare it is great to fit in a chapter or two. Although the book is made of short chapters, Notaro dos a good job of tying in bits and pieces from the whole book and keeps the reader engaged.

This book absolutely exceeded my expectations. It's not another typical froofy girly book for and about brainless twenty-somethings. As a twenty something, I really could appreciate this book, but I think that a mature younger crowd or a youthful older crowd could easily enjoy this book just as much. Autobiography of a Fat Bride is a genuinely good read. Creative, engaging, funny... I look forward to checking out more of Laurie Notaro. If you're looking for a fun refreshingly good book, check this one out.

This book is great, laugh out loud funny. If you read a lot, this is a perfect book to intersperse with books that are more serious. Laurie Notaro is the single most self-deprecating individual that you wonder if there is any way that she actually feels this way about herself. But then you relax and just enjoy the stories. Hysterical!!
