4.0 out of 5 stars A wild man truned fearless preacher, March 15, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Autobiography of Peter Cartwright, the Backwoods Preacher: The Backwoods Preacher (Hardcover)
A historical autobiography ending just before the Civil War, this book tells the story of a man who was saved by God from a life of gambling and wickedness to become one of the great circuit riding preachers of his day. Fearless and uncompromising, his experiences in the wilds of the American frontier and in the old camp meetings are interesting and sometimes downright funny. While he is rather biased toward the Methodist way of doing things, his keen observations on various things ranging from Joseph Smith, whom he met, to the events preceding the Civil War, as well as everyday life, make good reading to say the least. There are somewhat wordy passages, but the stories of various incidents more than make up for them. Recommended.
