A great review of a very competitive year in open wheel racing. The articles are well written and informative. The photographs really capture the color and pagentry of the season. If you attended the races it brings back great memories, if you didn't you certainly get the feel for the excitement. The driver profiles and manufacturers articles are well done. A must own for any open wheel racing fan and a great conversation piece on your coffee table.

4.0 out of 5 stars Revisit past Champ Car Glory, November 7, 2008

This review is from: Autocourse CART Official Yearbook 2000-2001 (Hardcover)
These autocourse CART books have excellent photography. The Coffee table sized book gives you a good run down on all the drivers and all the races during the season. Open wheel racing is far less popular(in the US) than NASCAR but I have always liked the open wheel racing events much better. The machines attain much faster speeds, especially in cornering and are far more beautiful, exotic.

As most everyone is aware CART(Championship Auto Racing teams) spun off from the Indy Car Racing people in the late 1980s. Unfortunately all the Indy Car people wanted to do was to take their exotic machines and travel all over the US to race on the same big circle track. CART drivers are more thoroughly challenged as they race at different types of tracks - road course, street course and oval. These make for exciting venues for race fans- the excitement of the Toronto Grand Prix, The beautiful Belle Isle in Detroit, the Texas Motor Speedway and the Surfers Paradise (Australia)street race among many others. They are all in this marvelous book, with many excellent color photographs that capture the excitement of open wheel racing (Open wheel racing is much like hockey in that both sports are not captured well on Television-attending a live event is much more enjoyable).

In the last few years CART became known as 'Champ Car Racing' and they raced for the last time in 2007(there were a few races in 08 but not an entire season). They merged with the blander Indy Racing League. The beautiful Champ Cars are now gone, the drivers now racing in the same boring flattened out open wheel cars as all the other IRL drivers. This fine book allows you to revisit past Champ Car glory.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forget NASCAR - Bring on the Open Wheelers !, January 19, 2007
By
This review is from: Autocourse CART Official Yearbook 2000-2001 (Hardcover)
For those outside the loop of racing, NASCAR garners a great deal of attention. Lost in all the attention paid to that series is a great style of racing collectively known as "open wheel" or "Champ Car." The series has evolved over the years but one thing has always remained. The races are fast, exciting and very competitive. How exciting? Put 800+ horsepower in a 1,600lb car that stands at knee level and enjoy the fun! If you are a fan - new or old - this series from Autocourse is a must-have. Autocourse started doing yearbooks 40+ years ago for the Formula One Grand Prix series and they have grown to include Champ Cars. They offer a tremendous amount of detail about the teams, drivers, cars, technical advances, etc. They also showcase the support series and the up-and-coming drivers in them. Each race is covered in detail with all qualifying times and finishing spots as well as highlights of the event itself. Photography is 100% incredible. That's another point. I enjoy doing my own photography and sometimes it's easy to lose track of things, especially if you don't get the film developed for a while. This book offers tremendous resource materials for someone maintaining photo albums of the events themselves. Basically, if you have a question about this style of racing, you'll find it in this book.
