MAIN REVIEW:
I've tried a bunch of different indoor dog potties over the years and have always ultimately been disappointed, either due to the mess (ever tried to empty some of these urine trays w/o spilling a drop?) or the smell (I've yet to find grass, for example, that doesn't soon stink like crazy w/o serious and regular maintenance). The best I'd found for my dog - small to medium size breed, around 25 lbs - was a Feline Pine litter box w/ pellets in the bottom tray to soak up and neutralize the urine odor. But it still required constantly buying litter and replacing it in the litter box every few days.

What I wanted was something like this, something that collects the urine and traps the odor at the same time, while also being easy to empty. It really is a great idea, and I'm convinced that this is, by far, the best product of its kind on the market today. It's the *only* one, in fact, that I'd ever actually seriously endorse.

I took a risk buying it, w/ so few reviews: 2 at the time (and since purchases are funneled to their own website, I suppose most of these reviews - including mine - will be unverified, meaning you always wonder if early reviews are plants from friends of the company). Anyway, I'm very glad I gave these guys a shot. For the first time in 8 years of trying, I'm finally happy.

CAVEATS:
It's not perfect, though. The two biggest issues are already mentioned in the instructions: the odor when emptying the potty, and dealing with softer stools. The instructions recommend that you consider purchasing an odor-neutralizing enzyme from your hardware store and putting it in the unit before use. I didn't do this. Wow, do I wish I had.

*****The State-of-the-Art potty is the best potty I have ever used with my dog. I used the artificial potty grass with tray for years and it was very inconvenient and very messy. My dog uses an indoor potty full-time. This potty is unique and is great because it is an enclosed unit. This is an easy device for any dog to use. I definitely recommend it.

*****Now, for dogs that refuse to use it like my dog, this is what I did. Initially, my dog did not want to use this new potty and adamantly refused. He even went potty other places in the house versus using this new potty. I remedied this. He needed to get it through his head that I am the alpha and I decide what is best for him and us. It took a whole weekend, but in the end it was worth it. He was use to the grass and I understood this, but this new grated potty is more convenient and thus better for all concerned. He is a very stubborn 20 pound little guy named Duke. Here is what I did: First, I collected about ½ cup of some pee from the old grass potty and poured it on the new State of the Art potty, so he would smell his own scent on the new potty. Then, I confined him and myself in the kitchen with the potty, some dog food and lots of water. I prepared myself to be with him in the kitchen until he used the potty on his own (not easy but worth it for me in the end). I watched him and after ENOUGH time had passed and I KNEW that he HAD to at least go pee pee..... I set him on the potty. If he walked away and did not go, I kept setting him there again and again and again (over and over). This is the test, I figured out. If you let him walk away and he has to go, you lose. I also ordered him to stay on the potty and go. Eventually, he did go pee pee. It wasn't easy and it was a test of wills.

I had serious reservations because everyone said their dog would not take to it but my dog did and on day one she was doing her doodie on it. lol What i did from the start was put her used pee pad on the grate to let her scent attach to the grate. It was placed in her usual spot so she knew already where to go. It worked, she has been going on it since the day it arrived. So i guess the key is to make sure the scent is attached to it and not to just place it down without the scent. And also make sure it is placed where they were already going. My only qualm is the grate is a little hard to remove for cleaning but anything is better than having to pick up the mess with the peepads and spending money on those pee pads. 5 starts from me.

I have been using indoor dog potties for 8 years with my Cavalier King Charles spaniel. I wished I had found this product sooner! This potty saves us so much money on dog potty pads and there is no smell because of the drainage system. Additionally, because the grate is rounded on top, it's much easier to clean and wipe down. The potty is made with special plastic that resists breakdown from uric acid. With the other potty we used, the urine would congeal on the bottom of the grate! It was so difficult to clean and smelled awful no matter how often we would change the pads. Our problems were solved with this new product.

I ordered the product directly from the manufacturer's website (stateoftheart.me) and it arrived just 2 days later. My dog transitioned to this potty seamlessly without any issues.
