I would give the Med-E-Lert 5 stars if not for two things. First, the audio alert is not that loud. many people buy this item for seniors and many seniors have hearing impairment problems. It is loud enough for most to hear but others may have a problem. The second thing about this item is the way the schedule templates attach to the pill holder. There are tabs that fold down into the compartments and those tabs can catch a pill and not let it come out. I would recommend removing the tabs and using double faced tape to carefully orient the template over the correct compartments. Other than those issues, this item is great. It works as it should. Is easy to set up--IF YOU CAREFULLY READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. I can not see why others had such problems programming the unit. It's simple--just read the instructions before and during set-up. The other key thing is this unit is battery powered--2-AA batteries. Batteries can fail and when they do the unit will not work. SO, keep a spre set ready and when the low battery alert is flashing in the screen, replace them earlier rather than later. I also recommend getting the clear top version versus the white top. The white may look better but you will not see if there are pills accidentally left in an opened compartment (they can get stuck if they are big and wedge themselves in the narrowing rears of the compartment. My mother is slightly hearing impaired, legally blind, takes about 8 pills twice a day, has the forgetfulness that many in their 80's will have, and has hand tremors. This device is a time saver and a great tool for her.

Bought this for my mother who has the beginnings of dementia. Works great. Solved all our problems with her not taking medication on time, and sometimes not even being able to locate her medications. The perfect solution.

I have 3 special needs children and this is a life saver for my 2 older children. It has progressed wonderfully with them over the past several years. In the beginning, I filled it, locked it and when it went off, I dispensed and administered (it was a life saver at that point for me to remember all their medications) As they got older, I would fill it and then they would dispense the medications on their own. The alarm served as a alert to me as to whether they had taken the pills. They will soon be learning to fill it on their own as they learn to manage their own med regime. It has taken several years of abuse and rigorous use. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because the top cover broke (I had to tape it), and it didn't feel quite as quality as another brand I had purchased(although the other brand was 3 times as expensive and I do bear that in mind)Overall I love it and am here to purchase one for myself!

It's a great product for a great price, except for the locking system. Whch was the main reason I bought it. A 6 year old with some tweasers could open it, but drilling one hole and taking out the locking mechanisom you can buy a small lock and lock it that way.

My mother was diagnosed with moderate Alzheimer. Her Alzheimer is not bad enough for her to stay home 24/7 therefore the insurance would not help with an in home care individual. However, I would go over to her home once a week and fill her medicine container and make sure she had everything she needed. Lately I was noticing that she was taking her medicine more than once a day and forgetting her evening medicine. This sporadic way she was taking her medicine was causing her dementia to get worse. We knew we had to do something, she was not ready for assistant living yet but she couldn't continue taking her medicine in this manner. I found this automatic pill dispenser with an alarm and it works great, she now is on a schedule and waits for the alarm to go off. Sometimes she forgets what time it is scheduled to go off and worries that it is broke but with a few questions over the phone I am able to ease her mind that everything is ok. The only thing I have trouble with this product is the tabs on the ring that you put on the dispenser, they do not stick down and a pill will get caught under it every once in a while. Otherwise I am very pleased with this item. It comes with a lock so that she is unable to open the dispenser and get the medicine out herself. Anyone that has trouble or has someone that has problems taking their medicine on time should invest in this dispenser.

This little device is saving my Mom $500 a month in assisted living charges. It's easy to work with and set up. We've been using it a week now and there's been no problems whatsoever. Am thinking of getting another one as backup.

I bought this for my mother who has AD as a means to keep her from over medicating herself. It worked great out of the box, the instructions to program it are easy enough to follow. And if the pill dispenser is used with care it seems to work flawlessly.

I used the phrase with care because my mom was able to break the unit within one week. She simply dropped the pill dispenser and the battery lid popped off and the latch was broken, then the batteries were not properly seated and then the clock and all the settings were lost, pills were missed. I am ordering another unit today as all the tape in the world will not keep the battery lid in place consistently and with AD consistency is key. I need to know that my mom's pills will be delivered as I am not with her everyday. I plan to tape the battery lid of the new unit down before giving it to my mom in the hopes that another drop will not break the lid.

My other complaint in general about any of these devices is that no one seems to make one that will dispense a patch-type medication. Not even the most expensive unit from e-pill.com can hold an Exelon patch.
