Good batteries, bad timer-based dumb charger, July 24, 2011
This review is from: T-868 High Volume Automatic Charger with 16 pcs Tenergy Centura Low Self Discharge AA 2000mAh Rechargeable Batteries, 4AA Card x4 ---NEW!
The batteries in this package ("
T-868 High Volume Automatic Charger with 16 pcs Tenergy Centura Low Self Discharge AA 2000mAh Rechargeable Batteries") are of decent quality. I have tested those previously (see my review of
Tenergy Centura AA for details), and found them to have similar capacity as the better-known
Sanyo Eneloop AA Pre-Charged Rechargeable Batteries. But Tenergy Centura cell are available at much lower cost, making them a good low-cost alternative for non-critical applications such as children's toys.
The charger in this package, however, is a piece of junk because:
1. It charges in pairs only. That is, either 2, 4, 6 or 8 cells at once. This is very inconvenient if you have appliances that require odd number of cells, such as LED flashlights. Inevitably, you'll mix up one completely drained cell with one full (or partially drained) cell in a pair. Charging them together will cause the latter cell to be over-charged, which is very bad for battery lifespan in the long run.
2. It is a Timer-Based dumb charger. It simply charges all your batteries at a small current (250mA for AA, 100mA for AAA) for a fixed time (8 hours), regardless of the actual battery status and capacity of each cell. For 2000mAh AA cells this time is just enough, because 250mA * 8 hour = 2000mAh. But you have to make sure that your batteries are fully drained before recharging them, otherwise they will be over-charged. Batteries with higher capacity (such as 2700mAh) cannot be fully charged in one session. You need to manually start the second session, but remember to terminate it before over-charging occurs.
3. Every time you want to start a new charging session, you have to unplug and then plug in the charger, in order to reset the 8-hour timer. If you have the charger plugged in and the power was interrupted briefly, the timer gets reset and it starts another 8-hour charging session. This again results in over-charging of your batteries.
My recommendation is to skip this T-868 dumb charger, and look for a 'smart' charger such as the
Sony Cycle Energy BCG34HRE4KN Quick with Refresh Charger. The BCG34HRE is a much better design because it charges each cell independently. It monitors the voltage of each cell during charging and stops when each cell is full, so cells will not be over-charged. Its charging current is also higher, so you can recharge 1-4 AA cells in just 4 hours, instead of having to wait for 8 hours as in the case of T-868.

(were) Great batteries..., January 13, 2009

EDITED REVIEW:
These batteries did not last long. Unfortunately, I failed to update my review and hope I didn't lead any of you astray. The batteries worked as advertised for about 6 months, after which time they began holding less of a charge. Before we finally tossed them in the garbage, they would charge for 30 minutes and last less than 5 in a toy. I strongly recommend that you cough up a bit more money and buy a name-brand set of rechargeables.

OLD REVIEW:
Everything they claim is true. They're rechargeable and are perfect for families with kids.
Also, the 10-pc. charger is perfect for getting a large number charged simultaneously.
