Editorial Reviews

After meeting in 1991, Bristol-based Mark Hockings and Richard Silverton formed Mesh, and released their first EP in 1994. Since then, the band has become one of the most beloved acts in the synthpop scene. Unafraid to experiment, the band excels at pushing themselves musically while staying true to their sound. The long-awaited new album Automation Baby is yet another giant step forward for Mesh. The album has a huge sound and big songs. It s fresh, cutting-edge, complex, deep, and emotional. Featuring the duo s newest single Born To Lie, Automation Baby is one of the most anticipated releases of the year!

If I were to find one word to describe the album Automation Baby, I would have to say 'Big!' This album is very well produced. The sounds are clean and clear and Mark's vocals remain crisp clear and powerful as ever. It's hard to describe the 'Big' feel that the album has except to say that the songs fill up your aural senses without being overwhelming. My hearing pleasure is filled to capacity perfectly.

The album contains a good mix of fast moving songs, gritty angry songs, powerful songs, and some mellow songs that rely more on Mark's vocals and catchy melodies. One of my favorite elements of a great Mesh song is where you're listening to the song and you know the crescendo is coming where the chorus catches you and you can't NOT sing along. This album is full of those songs. The musical style has progressed with some new elements. I hear a little bit of dubstep 'wub' in a couple of songs, but not enough to take away or distract from the definite Mesh sound.

If you've been a Mesh fan before this album then this is a must have. If you're new to the world of Mesh get this album, turn it up, and prepare to be hooked!

Although they have been around awhile, I never heard of Mesh until I accidentally stumbled upon this CD at a local music store. Easily comparible to Depesche Mode, This is an exceptional CD with incredibly moving music and thought-provoking lyrics. They are more popular in Europe than in the states, which is a sad testament to the currnt state of American radio airwaves: I wish the radio would do away with the overload of generic Justin Beiber-esque garbage and offer more music like this. Standout tracks include: "Taken For Granted," "You Want What's Owed to You," "The Way I Feel," and "On.Anon" (only available on the deluxe edition CD). This is a truly great album and truly great musicianship.

I've been a Mesh fan for years, and have most of their albums. They've kept their fingers on the pulse, and have updated their sound accordingly. It's still very Mesh, but there are echoes of dubstep here. It's subtle and not overdone. Clearly the group is still experimenting and growing. I'll be listening to this a lot.
