I have been in Fleet Maintenance for over 19 years. Having never attempted the ASE certifications this book was a great help. Allot of the questions were the same ( about 45% ). I took 6 ASE tests and past the 5 I took the time to read through this book. You do need a basic understanding for this book to be effective.

This manual is great for anyone who is preparing to become ASE master certified, or for anyone who is going to take more than one automotive ASE exam. The hints in each chapter are helpful on some of the tougher questions and the practice questions really help to prepare.

I bought this for my husband because of the reviews I read on it at Amazon and he needed a test prep book. He just took the ASE tests A1-A8 and passed them all Nov. '09. He has taken them before--I think twice.

"Yay. A beginner would definitely benefit from this book as well as taking the ASE practice tests that they offer online. I did both. I think the studying helped although there was not one question from all my studies including the online stuff that matched or were the same. But the concepts were there that I needed to get the textbook take on (as opposed to the real world take)".

A personal note from me: My husband is an excellent test taker anyway, so that helped. He was top of his class in auto school. He has worked in the auto field for 10 years, so he wasn't a "wet nose" starting out when he took the ASEs this time. This is the first time he has used this book.

Bottom line--my husband says this book helped him, but if you're looking for the exact questions and answers, you probably won't find them anywhere. This book requires you to use your brain, which you should be doing anyway instead of memorizing questions and answers.

I only used it to help me pass the Engine Performance test. I already passed the Engines test. It was very helpful. The practice test were top of the line. You got a hint with each question in the review and a few paragraphs to study. Much better than just doing a bunch of questions. Everything was explained in great detail.

I will be using this book to pass Brakes and Suspension. Which I hear is a bit easier than Engines and Engine Performance. Definitely worth every penny of the price if you really want to pass the ASE's.

This book has plenty of questions to get you tuned up for your tests. Includes all 8 areas, plus L1, and I have found it to be a great help!

the book is great so far i feel confident in takin the ase in may....except for brakes. i have taken brakes before and nothing that was on the tests were in this book mainly the electronic braking questions that will either pass or fail you. but other than the brake section the book is great!

great product very useful for ASE's but you will need to know automotive concepts to fully understand this book. I got it in excellent condition.

i ordered this guide for ase because i had to renew several tests..
i did use it and slowly got comfortable with the study set up . it takes some getting use to. a lot of questions are packaged with a brief explanation of the subject .
i never really felt completely satisfied with it.. i felt that the book should have offered more, included more relevant questions to todays automotive system, and offered more in depth explanation for the study questions.
but the fact that there are so many questions does help.

I had just taken 5 test past three, I checked with some of the info in this book after the test. I found little that correlated with the questions.
I passed the three, because the info did not change in those three areas in along time.
The others, material wasn't even close.
Am looking for another test booklet

If you are going into the automotive field this is a great book to help you prepare to work in the industry.
