5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for any level Auto Tech Student
I've used this book for my Auto Tech classes and it is the most comprehensive auto tech manual out there. Very informative and highly detailed. Get the accompanying Tech Manual for hands on lessons and projects. No dissapointments!

2.0 out of 5 stars Piles of info-poorly edited
The quality comparison of this book next to other college level books (non-automotive) as a device for learning is both sloppy and poor. I read this edition for my course. It is cobbled information about parts/systems of automobiles. Pet peeve #1: Acronym usage, an acronym is explained once, sometimes several chapters back, and then used without an explanation or catalog...

The best book I ever read, very informative except that the author decided to delete the topic regarding the carburators in this edition. I think they should retain it as part of yesterday, today and future technology to aid new technician in case they ask to repair carburator a lot of car using carburator still running in our street specially in my country Philippines. The rest of the book are awesome!! great!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Bible, May 22, 2006
This review is from: Automotive Technology: A Systems Approach (Hardcover)
This book is so complete and exhaustive that it could be called the Automotive technology Bible! But remember, this book is for the serious reader, not for the occasional reader! Buy this if you are serious about the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Student textbook, February 21, 2009

I am just a simple guy that is trying to save a little money by repairing my own cars. I've done fairly well so far, so I wanted to try and learn to be a bit more precise in what I do and try to have the knowledge of a mechanic while still keeping my day job. I found that this book really fit the bill.

I think it should be mentioned that this is essentially a student textbook, with review questions and a point of view that you're working towards becoming a mechanic after "graduating". Considering that I never took an automotive class while in high school, this was perfect for me. However, this information might be overly simplistic to someone else that may have had prior training. Since I don't know what all the tools and parts are called, this was perfect. What anyone can appreciate is the high quality of the glossy pages and vibrant color of this textbook format. You might even wonder if you forgot to finish your homework that is due tomorrow!

This is based on the older published version but with updated material like newer ignition and emission regulation. This book has more colored pictures than the previous edition.

I generally like the previous edition more because it was what I learned with. There is less color and it goes straight to the point. I have only skimmed through this book. Other than that, its a good book to learn about automotive technology.

If you really want to learn, go through each chapter throughly and do the review and questions. (and of course, do hands on)

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't try to read it cover to cover, April 20, 2009

I was working with a mechanic while trying to read this cover to cover...

Although it can be done like that, I started burning out and falling asleep in the tool section.

In retrospect it probably would have been better to read up on what we were working on at the time.

I am going to pick it up again, and jump around this time.

It is a very good book though!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource!, December 12, 2009

This book was everything it looked to be. I am not taking any automobile courses, I was looking to supplement my knowledge and understanding of the various systems. It was a great deal for me used since it was not education related. Really helped to move my car know-how from the 50's and 60's into the NOW! I give it two big thumbs up!

2.0 out of 5 stars Piles of info-poorly edited, April 9, 2010

The quality comparison of this book next to other college level books (non-automotive) as a device for learning is both sloppy and poor. I read this edition for my course. It is cobbled information about parts/systems of automobiles. Pet peeve #1: Acronym usage, an acronym is explained once, sometimes several chapters back, and then used without an explanation or catalog of meanings to be found in the book. BAD for instructors who teach by jumping around. Pet peeve #2: I can go online and find basic symptom/cause charts. Why so few, and good luck finding them when you need them. Pet peeve #3: Conversion charts: 2. Metric to Decimal & General Bolt Torques. That's it! Pet peeve #4: The book has a full SPANISH glossary of general automotive terms, remember peeve #1? No acronyms defined! In finality... As a dirty prep to get your students on the same idea for next class discussion, sure. But you could do just as well to do a little research and give them a bibliography of web address'.
