Biography

Yusef Lateef (b. 1920), a multi-instrumentalist who is equally skilled on tenor saxophone, flute, and oboe, is also a multiculturalist whose musical interests have long gone beyond jazz, a word he disdains. An innovator in mixing world music influences into jazz, Lateef is in his own musical category.

Originally an altoist, Lateef switched to tenor while in high school. He worked early on with… Read more in Amazon's Yusef Lateef Store

5.0 out of 5 stars A Funky Jazz album, or a Jazzy Funk album, March 21, 2004
By
Jeff Bristol (Augusta, Ga United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Autophisiopsychic (Audio CD)
I got this album as part of a collection my dad had. It was one of his favorites and is definatly one of mine. This album is an interesting blend of Jazz and pop music. It is synthesized and electric in a way usually associated with funk, but overlain with Lateef's sax played in a very aggressive exploratory manner. It is one of my favorite funk, or jazz albums and continues to surprise. The electronic bass lines are a particular treat. The lyrics are wonderful and flow very well with the music. This album was an outgrowth of as collaboration with a variety of artists called the Autophysiopsychic Partnership which also published a volume of essays and poetry by Lateef called Something Else.
