4.0 out of 5 stars Wow., August 13, 2002

They used to be Cooter.

They also used to be not that good.

With the name change comes a kickass new sound, apparently.

I have all of Cooter's old stuff, and while it was enjoyable to listen to at the time, none of it was very memorable, and I have no desire to dig their CDs out of the boxes in my room.

This, on the other hand, has been in constant rotation in my CD player in the past month.

First and foremost, the production is top notch - from the opening chords of standout track "Long Way To Fall" to the closing feedback of "Wide Awake," the album sounds crisp and fresh. The major label backing has definitely paid off in that department.

The guitar interplay is pretty advanced for a band of this style - a lot of it is just trading barre chords in different frets, but it sounds *cool* doing it. The vocal harmonies are neat, too, but the downside to that is that singer Chris is just that - the only singer. So live, kiss those harmonies bye-bye.

Sure, the band's sound still ain't the most original sound in the world, but this EP is way more than a step in the right direction. These songs are catchy as hell punk rock. I wouldn't label it pop punk, or skate punk, or emo punk, or anything besides just good old punk rock. This is the EP you want to have blaring out of your car stereo driving down the highway to a show. I think I need to go dig out my old Cooter CDs to really make sure that they weren't this good all along and were just hiding it from me...

4.0 out of 5 stars Supurb Similarity, August 14, 2002
By
This review is from: Autopilot Off (Audio CD)
This is an awesome cd. It as a powerful opening song, "Long Way To Fall", and continues it aggressive, hard hitting pop punk feel all the way through "Wide Awake". Chris J's aggressive vocals and astonishing lyrics provide one with the same aggression in his/her heart while Chris and Chris, Rob, and Phil tear it up on their guitars and drums. The cd did not earn 5 stars from me because of, like their first release "Lookng UP", it's similarity. The only track that tears away from it's repeatitive sound is "Wide Awake". The mixing and mastering on the EP is outstanding. Pick up this record now and if you get a chance, go watch them in action LIVE. They put on a rad show and they are rad guys.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mark, July 30, 2002

This CD is truely awesome. I recently came upon their stuff on the internet and loved it. I found their CD online and bought it right then. The CD is only an EP so you dont get too many songs but the songs speak for themselves. Its [inexpensive] too so it makes up for it. If you like punk that has a little more of a rock feel than some of the newer blink stuff or NFG, than i know you'll love this. "Indebted" and "Nothing Frequency" truley rock as well as the rest of the CD. So if you're at all interested in buying this CD definitely get it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great New Sound In Punk Music, August 14, 2002

This 5 song EP is without a doubt my favorite cd in my collection, and this is coming from somebody who tradtionally doesnt listen to punk music. Every song is like 3 minutes of musical bliss. If there is one new band you listen to this year make sure it is A.P.O. You will definetly be hearing of them again soon, with tracks like "Long way to fall" "Exit signs" and "Nothing frequency" this EP will have you begging for more. Dont take my word though, make the smartest ($$) investment in your life and buy this cd!

4.0 out of 5 stars Autopilot Off-the New Kings of Rock, August 13, 2002
By

The Autopilot Off EP combines the melodic hooks of pop-punk with a just a twinge of hardcore. These two elements have been merged in the past by punk bands, but often fall short of expectations. However, Autopilot Off manages to pull it out quite nicely, especially on the intro track "Long Way To Fall". In terms of pure melodic bliss look no further than track 3, "Nothing Frequency". It's the type of song that you'll be singing for weeks because of it's razor sharp hook. The vocal talent of Chris Johnson and the tightness of the music behind him is ultimately what sets Autopilot Off apart from other bands.
...And oh yeah they rock hard live, I had the pleasure of catching them on the Warped Tour.

4.0 out of 5 stars upbeat and enjoyable, August 9, 2005

I myself am a enormous autopilot Off fan and have been hooked on quite a few of their songs. I already had Make a Sound, so I decided to get this one. Whoa! For a CD with only five songs it was great. This one is for real punk fans, alternative, or even just those who want something refreshing. Here's the lowdown peoples! :)

Long Way to Fall: Winner The band shows resilience when being put down by others. It has some ups and downs, but it encourages people to make a stand through our trials.

Indebted: Total Winner Yeah man I never get tired of this one. The lyrics talk of going through struggles again, BUT this time the singer IS NOT alone and he survives with someone else. (family, friend, or whoever). great guitar too.

Nothing Frequency winner He He... Beware, catchy song. There isn't truly any deep meaning to this one, although it says to ask for help and stay strong. This is one of those, "fun songs."

Exit Signs: Mostly a winner Not the greastest of songs, got some kinda weird lyrics, but does have a few good one liners, such as telling people to live above and beyond their not so meaningful lives.

Wide Awake loser I've listened to this one only three times, mostly since I just wanted to find out what it really means. Hey I got nothing against hard rock, but this is "bad" hard rock. Out of place yells, poor base and guitar, and just talking about breaking up with someone, but not even giving any ending to it and taking away hope. It just kinda leaves you hanging with a bad taste in your mouth.

Summary: a great CD besides last track and has me shouting me more and more, "Just pull yourselves together Autopilot Off and make another good album, soon!" peace out

4.0 out of 5 stars Autopilot Off "Autopilot Off", June 1, 2004

"Long Way To Fall" 5/5
"Indebted" 4/5
"Nothing Frequency" 4/5
"Exit Signs" 3/5
"Wide Awake" 3/5

Autopilot Off's debut ep is awesome. There isn't a bad song on the album (there are only 5, but still). It is a great introduction for people who want to get into the band, or another great release for fans who only have their full length "Make A Sound."

Overall rating: Four stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars (only five songs) dont fret!!!!, April 22, 2004
By
This review is from: Autopilot Off (Audio CD)
I first saw APO in dallas 2002 with Rufio, the ataris and sugarcult. i bought this EP at that concert and was absolutely amazed with it. Chris sings a little "nasal" to me but the music is so great you dont even relize it. heres a song by song review:
long way to fall- great song to start the cd, the bass in this song is incredible, its so much fun to rock out to this song.

indebted- holy crap cakes this song is fantabulous, i cant get enough of it. the first couple of times i listened to this song i couldnt unerstand barely any of it, and now i know what they say and its an amazing song.i love it when he says"under the strain i had to watch you struggle your spirit just refused to break"

nothing freq- i love the way the drums enter right at the beginning of this song, it makes you feel like there in the very same room with you, craziness.

exit signs- oh yes great song, awesome lyrics.its acually a sad song if you listen to the lyrics, but you wouldnt even know it was sad unless you pay attention to the lyrics.

wide awake- this is my favorite song. it starts out real quiet but the it kix into gear and its absolutely amazing. i love the guitar/drum solo.i think its about not being able to make up your mind when you hav a g/b friend. and the akward time right before a break up.
this is just all aroung a great cd. i dont really think they sound like anyone else, but if anything if you like Rufio or New Found Glory(there new song) then youll like APO. i also recomend Make A Sound. its their full length album.for lyrics visit: www.azlyrics.com
Nikki Rae
