4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable, May 5, 2000
This review is from: Autour de Lucie (Audio CD)
Nice music, very simple pop. The lyrics are making sense. A good CD to listen to from time to time. The singer as a great voice. A french CD that changes from the ritual Edith Piaf or Celine Dion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Darned catchy, November 8, 1998

This review is from: Autour de Lucie (Audio CD)
Very good. Nice poppy, rhythmic tunes, lyrics full of typical French melancholy. "Le ballade du deserteur" is the best. I will admit, this CD becomes addicive. It does help to know some French, though-if not enough to know what the lyrics mean instantly, enough to get out a dictionary and translate them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Echapee Belle, November 3, 2000
This review is from: Autour de Lucie (Audio CD)
As already noted this CD is incorrectly titled as live. It is, in fact, a US release by Nettwerk Records of "Echapee Belle" (Beautiful Escape), the bands 1996 release from la village verte.

Beautiful melodies and sexy vocals. If you're looking for gourmet this isn't it but if you like fast food from time to time Autour de Lucie will hit the spot. It's not just burgers and fries though. Vallerie Leuillot's lyrics are heart felt and often haunting, her storytelling being reminiscent of the style of Harriet Wheeler. In fact it is probably not unfair to compare the band's sound to that of The Sundays (although all comparisons are a little unfair).

4.0 out of 5 stars Great CD, September 19, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Autour de Lucie (Audio CD)
First, this CD is incorrectly described as a "[LIVE]" album. It is actually a great studio album. The songs are all incredibly well crafted with fantastic music and vocals. Definitely worth more than one listen if it doesn't grab you the first time around.

I first heard Autour de Lucie on Faux Movement and fell in love with their music. I then purchased this album and was floored yet again. An absolute gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars A small, lovely treasure, January 21, 2009
This review is from: Autour de Lucie (Audio CD)
A bird chirps, bells ring, and a perfect jangle-pop song begins this enchanting album, carried on the alluring vocals of Valérie Leulliot. It's a promise of quiet musical delight that's kept all the way to the end, with a leavening of gorgeous chamber pop strings & woodwinds in places, and a sound not unlike that of the Sundays (as noted by a previous reviewer). Whether you speak French or not, it's all as inviting as a bright summer day, touched with a shadow or two of reflection & rue.

As you can see, it's sadly out of print [edit: and apparently back in print!], like most of the work from this underrated band. But it's worth seeking out -- I find it's an album I've returned to many times over the years, one that's always as fresh & sweet as a field of wildflowers. Highly recommended!
