Book Description

March 13, 2012 Autumn

It's been almost one hundred days since a killer disease wiped out 99% of the population. Three months since the dead reanimated. Survivors are few and far between now, and those who remain stick together to give themselves the best possible chance of continuing to stay alive. They are the last of the living.

A band of refugees has taken shelter in a medieval castle – a fortress that has stood strong for hundreds of years. Besieged by the dead, they only emerge when it’s absolutely necessary. As autumn turns to winter, however, the balance of power slowly begins to shift.

The unexpected appearance of survivors from another group changes everything. They bring choice, and an alternative way of life which is a far cry from the world everyone has been forced to leave behind. Society as we know it has crumbled beyond repair and things will never be the same again. Some people are ready to embrace this change, others can’t let go of the past. The choice is divisive.

Are we entering mankind's final days? In the aftermath of the disease, will the last survivors destroy each other, or will the dead destroy them all?

Editorial Reviews

Review

"As demonstrated throughout his previous novels, readers should crown Moody king of the zombie horror novel, and his final book in the Autumn series adds a much-deserved jewel to his crown. Certainly, this is action-packed, with corpses attacking on every other page, but the novel truly succeeds when Moody slows down the action and looks at human nature in the face of utter inhalation. Two years since the infection ravaged the entire world, wiping out 99 percent of the population, the new novel follows two groups of survivors, who fight hunger, fear, and, at times, boredom. The heartbreaking reality of their situation is magnified, however, when the first baby is conceived, leaving readers to wonder whether heartache or hope lives within the future of its small life."—Booklist

"Moody is as imaginative as Barker, as compulsory as King and as addictive as Palahniuk"—SCREAM Magazine

About the Author

DAVID MOODY was born in 1970 and grew up on a diet of trashy horror and science fiction books and movies. He worked as a bank manager and as operations manager for a number of financial institutions before giving up the day job to write about the end of the world for a living. He has written a number of horror novels, including AUTUMN, which was downloaded more than half a million times and spawned a series of sequels and a movie starring Dexter Fletcher and David Carradine. Film rights to his novel HATER have been bought by Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) and Mark Johnson (producer of the Chronicles of Narnia films). Moody lives outside Birmingham (UK) with his wife and a houseful of daughters and stepdaughters, which may explain his pre-occupation with Armageddon.

More About the Author

Here are my biographies from my UK and US publishers. They both seem to tell half the story each!

David Moody was born in 1970 and grew up in Birmingham on a diet of trashy horror and pulp science fiction books and movies. He worked as a bank manager and as operations manager for a number of financial institutions before giving up the day job to write about the end of the world for a living. He has written a number of horror novels, including AUTUMN, which has been downloaded more than half a million times since publication in 2001 and has spawned a series of sequels and a movie starring Dexter Fletcher and David Carradine. Film rights to HATER have been bought by Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth) and Mark Johnson (producer of the Chronicles of Narnia films). Moody lives outside Birmingham (UK) with his wife and a houseful of daughters and stepdaughters, which may explain his pre-occupation with Armageddon.

DAVID MOODY self published Hater online in 2006, and without an agent, succeeded in selling film rights to Guillermo del Toro (director, Hellboy 1 & 2, Pan's Labyrinth and the upcoming Hobbit series) and Mark Johnson (producer, The Chronicles of Narnia). With the official publication of Hater, David is poised to make a significant mark as a writer of "farther out" fiction of all varieties.

Bestselling horror author, David Moody, returns with the fifth and final Autumn novel. Written over a span of ten years, the Autumn story follows two disparate groups of survivors and their battles to survive a world overrun by the living dead. But while years may have passed for us readers, the survivors are only moving into winter now: this shift in seasons plays a pivotal role in Aftermath's story.

Aftermath begins from the perspective of the living dead, a young woman called Jessica Lindt, now wandering in the wastegrounds of post-apocalyptic Britain. And this too is quite significant, Aftermath not only being the most character-focused of the series when it comes to the survivors, but the dead also: there are significant changes within both the personality and behaviour of the book's `zombies' that have serious implications upon the survivors and their plans for long-term survival.

Most of the story centres around an old castle where a twenty strong group of survivors have taken up residence. The castle, no stranger to sieges in the past, is now surrounded by thousands of dead bodies, making supply runs something of a problem. Food and water is limited. Tension begins to mount.

Pressure is the main currency here. How it grows amongst the survivors, what it does to them, what it makes them do to each other. And herein lies a major strength of the book; Moody pulls no punches in his no-frills character study. As the siege continues, and cabin fever sets in, the survivors eventually turn on each other. This power struggle is the core of Aftermath's story. As in the very first modern zombie story, Romero's 1968 film, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, a dispute between key figures results in tragedy. And that single event causes a rift between the survivors that could spell doom for everyone.

But let's not forget the dead, those hapless beasts clawing at the castle walls. As their bodies continue to deteriorate, the survivors begin to suspect that their days of being a threat are numbered. A bitter frost gives an even greater advantage, many of the outside hordes finding themselves literally frozen on the spot, allowing the survivors considerable room for manoeuvre in the outside world. But the discovery of more secluded bodies, better preserved than those in the open, leads to a shocking discovery about the dead's raison d'etre, and a key turning point for the living.

The Autumn series is as realistic an account of the zombie apocalypse as you're going to find. Aftermath is an emotional book: a fitting end to a traumatic story about the human condition. Fans of the series will feel satisfied, if not a little sad at waving goodbye to those characters they've spent time getting to know. And with a beautifully emotive afterword from the author himself, you know that David Moody is right there with them.

Aftermath begins focusing on a group of survivors hiding out in a castle to keep the walking corpses at bay until they have decayed enough to pose no threat. When a chance encounter with the group from Cormansey divides the castle dwellers on the best course of action (staying or joining the island group) it turns into a fight for survival not only against the dead, but against the living as well. As excited as I was to get an Advanced Reading Copy of Aftermath, I was equally reluctant to begin the final chapter in this phenomenal saga. David Moody artfully crafted a post apocalyptic world that seems harsh and cruel, then created characters to inhabit it that are as real as you and I. They are brilliantly flawed in their humanity, making the reader love them or hate them (and in some cases both.)These characters make the world seem less harsh. Aftermath feels a great deal like holding a mirror to society at the present. It showcases the human spirit both negative and positive in a time of panic and survival. How kindness and a desire to help fellow man is only one reaction. Life and death situations can also cause a person to snap, showing their weaknesses and greed. With every page in Aftermath I was drawn deeper into the Autumn world. Mr. Moody has a way of writing that effortlessly brings you inside the book. As sad as I am that a wonderful series has come to its end, the end was perfect. Now we can look forward to the next great novel from this extremely talented writer.

One nanosecond ago everything was fine; a moment later 99% of the human race died; however over the next three months the dead failed to stay dead as they returned as the mindless undead with an innate instinct to kill the 1% of human survivors. Several of the 1% survivors reach the remote island of Cormansey; access exclusively by air ad boat, making this isolated rock zombie free for the fifty-one humans including a pregnant women. They helicopter to Chadwick to obtain needed supplies.

Another of the 1% made it to fortified Cheatham Castle. These twenty-one survivors go to Chadwick for supplies too. The two human groups collide as the castle dwellers believe the islanders are encroaching on their territory of Chadwick. The islanders invite the Chadwick crew to join them on the island as there is strength in numbers. Many want to go but their leaders refuse to give up their power. As tension mounts, the two small pockets of humans seem ready to war with each other instead of allying against the greater threat.

The final Autumn urban fantasy (see Autumn: Disintegration and Autumn: The City) is a great finish to a fabulous zombie thriller. The underlying premise is that those on power obsess with remaining in power at any cost even to their own group's survival. With a deep look at the human need to dominate or subordinate, readers will relish this entry as only the strong survive by using the weaker as fodder.
