More About the Author

Douglas R Hernandez was born in Baton Rouge, LA, to a mixed Mexican and Cajun family. He's moved around a lot and has lived in enough places to say, "all over these United States." He considers Everywhere to be his home.

From his earliest days, he's had stories to tell. These come from flights of fancy, anecdotal incidents, strange daydreams, and real events in his life. He enjoys writing them down with the hope that someone will read them someday.

Currently, he lives in Minnesota's Twin Cities with his family, where he spends his time writing software and stories.

If you see him around, call him Doug and ask him to make you some gumbo or jambalaya.

Autumn Girl is the first offering from an exciting new voice in modern fantasy. It is, by large, a tale of the coming of age of young Eva, a girl born to an extraordinary family, hidden away for generations in the depths of appalachia.

Eva is the unwitting heiress to a legacy of power and responsibility. She has always known that she was different; the true extent of her abilities, however, has always been kept from her. Left largely to her own devices, her fledgling attempts to understand who and what she is sets in motion a course of events that threatens to destroy that legacy.

Autumn Girl is suitable for teens through adults, and is a refreshing change from the bland, predictable tropes of today's YA fantasy lit.

Autumn Girl is an excellent modern fantasy, set in a well thought out and detailed contemporary world imbued with magic, haunted by ghosts and defiled by killers and demons. At it's heart is a young girl, Eva, who increasingly becomes aware of her magical power and pre-ordained role in an ancient, druidic family cycle. The story starts simply, innocently, but over time as Eva discovers the potential for evil in her magical world the novel transforms into a complex and dark fairy tale.

I thoroughly enjoyed the novel, especially the second half in which a host of interesting characters are thrown into intersecting courses of intense, often violent action. I found myself reading well past bed time, unable to put it down.

I'd recommend this as an entertaining read. Note that when you sample the book using amazon's "Look Inside" feature you're only introduced to Eva at her earliest stages of power, and that the language and characterizations all become more complex right up to the books riviting climax.

This book screams sequel. The character development is great and what hooked me on the book. The concept of magic having an emotional price made a somewhat unlikable character become likable. The book has an exciting and evolving plot and is well worth reading.

.... and the sometimes painful path it's young wielder is set upon by opposing forces of good and evil.

Douglas R. Hernandez spins a multi-textured yarn of mystery and adventure that takes our young heroine Eva to heights of elation and success that most children her age never dream of. She is also tempted by an ancient malevolence to use her barely controlled powers to serve greed, corruption, and chaos.

Is Eva's bond to her family strong enough to keep her from descending into madness? Will the struggle within consume her and her family? Can Eva resist the quick and easy path to evil?

Let us all hope so. For if not, the power contained within her tiny body is strong enough to destroy everyone and everything in her world.

This was an engaging dark fantasy that felt like a classic fairy tale interwoven into modern times. Anytime you have the level of general darkness and family history that this family has lived through, and the author brilliantly describes, you know you are headed down some intriguing paths. The lessons Eva learns throughout from her remarkable, yet strange family, all while interacting with the magic around her created a magnificent read that kept you involved throughout. I would highly recommend this book. You won't be disappointed, but like me, will be waiting for the next chapter in this series to learn even more about this remarkable family.

As someone who doesn't typically read this genre, I was hooked so I had to write a review. I found myself fascinated by the characters and the development of their stories in this book. I don't usually enjoy fantasy or magic but this book pulled me in from the beginning and kept me interested to the very action-packed end. And while I agree with another reviewer that this book was dark, the story was so compelling and the depth the author brought to the story made it something I wanted to read. I would love to read more about this family or other generations of Autumn Girls!

Something of Laura Esquivel in this. I wish I had kids to read it to. It belongs with classics IMHO.

Quite honestly, I am a very busy person and I don't often take chances on new authors. In this case, I am glad I did. The book is descriptive, immersive, and is truly an enjoyable adventure to read. The story is unique, the characters are imaginative, and the author’s writing style balances on the line between accessible and intricate with magnificent results.
