Book Description

December 20, 2007
Returning to her Wyoming ranch at the Civil War's end, Elyssa Sutton finds it picked bare by scavengers and coveted by determined men. Yet the proud young woman vows never again to abandon her Ruby Mountain home, though it means enlisting the aid of a dark and dangerous stranger who lives for revenge alone. Hunter Maxwell has suffered from the savagery of outlaws and the faithlessness of a woman. And he will trust no female - nor will he rest until the raiders who destroyed his family pay for their crimes. A woman in need, a man in pain, in fury and fire they must now stand as one - to fight for something cherished, something lost ... and for a passion neither dreamed could live.

Amazon.com Review

Beautiful, determined Elyssa Sutton has returned to her isolated ranch in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada after the Civil War -- but the Culpepper gang wants the horses, the ranch, and Elyssa, and they'll kill anyone who gets in their way. Can Hunter Maxwell, the handsome, bitter ranch foreman she hires when he appears mysteriously out of the moonlight, protect her? --This text refers to the Mass Market Paperback edition.

From Publishers Weekly

The isolated setting (Nevada's Ruby Mountains) intensifies this love story about an embittered Civil War veteran and an outspoken heroine fighting to save her ranch from ruin. When Elyssa hires Hunter to protect the Ladder S from the Culpepper gang, their mutual attraction leads to arguments and near kisses that spice up a rather predictable story and hackneyed language ("all the seasons of love were theirs"). After they become lovers, Elyssa discovers that his appearance was not an accident?Hunter tracked down the Culpeppers to avenge the death of his wife and children. With his brother Case's help, Hunter is able to drive off the raiders, though Abner Culpepper escapes and Case pursues him into the next Lowell novel, to be published in the fall of 1996. Hunter and Elyssa's story draws to a satisfying finish that makes it a good bet for Lowell fans and western romance aficionados.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!, February 15, 2000

This was my first book by Elizabeth Lowell and one of the few historical westerns I have read. If all the historical westerns out there were as well written as this I would read more of them. Lowell did an excellent job of allowing the reader to really get inside the main characters heads. The passion and the emotions between Hunter and Elyssa jump right off the pages at you. I was dissapointed when I realized I was near the end of the book but glad that I had Winter Fire to start right away so I could find out what happened to Case and the Culpeppers. I will definitely buy more of Lowell's books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as fantastic as I expected, July 14, 2000
Autumn Lover was good. The only problem I had was in Hunter's attitude towards Elyssa. He constantly made disparaging assumptions about her character, and I found it difficult to accept his eventual love for her. He disliked the way she dressed, the way she moved, in fact EVERYTHING about her! Elyssa, knowing that her old dresses did not cover her up very well, and knowing that it contributed to unwelcome advances from one of her hands, continued to wear them, even though she was unconfortable in those clothes. I liked her character - she was strong and determined. Although Hunter's past does redeem him to a certain extent, it still couldn't justify all of his actions. Winter Fire is a much better read - definitely 5 stars, and worth buying. I'd recommend reading this book, if only to get more insight into Case Maxwell's character.

3.0 out of 5 stars it is great but needs a bit more, November 28, 2000
I liked the western romance, it was full of sexual tension and action. Although I agree that Hunter was scarred by war and death I don't agree with the way he talked to Elyssa most of the time. A woman deserves respect and somethings were just too much. I Would have done a lot of other things in her place like slapp him a few times. She should have been a bit stronger. All in all it is a good romance novel, it is fast paced and satisfied me.
