5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down!
This was my first book by Elizabeth Lowell and one of the few historical westerns I have read. If all the historical westerns out there were as well written as this I would read more of them. Lowell did an excellent job of allowing the reader to really get inside the main characters heads. The passion and the emotions between Hunter and Elyssa jump right off the...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as fantastic as I expected
Autumn Lover was good. The only problem I had was in Hunter's attitude towards Elyssa. He constantly made disparaging assumptions about her character, and I found it difficult to accept his eventual love for her. He disliked the way she dressed, the way she moved, in fact EVERYTHING about her! Elyssa, knowing that her old dresses did not cover her up very well, and...

Lowell did an excellent job of allowing the reader to really get inside the main characters heads. The passion and the emotions between Hunter and Elyssa jump right off the pages at you. I was dissapointed when I realized I was near the end of the book but glad that I had Winter Fire to start right away so I could find out what happened to Case and the Culpeppers. I will definitely buy more of Lowell's books.

Elyssa, knowing that her old dresses did not cover her up very well, and knowing that it contributed to unwelcome advances from one of her hands, continued to wear them, even though she was unconfortable in those clothes. I liked her character - she was strong and determined. Although Hunter's past does redeem him to a certain extent, it still couldn't justify all of his actions. Winter Fire is a much better read - definitely 5 stars, and worth buying. I'd recommend reading this book, if only to get more insight into Case Maxwell's character.

3.0 out of 5 stars it is great but needs a bit more, November 28, 2000
I liked the western romance, it was full of sexual tension and action. Although I agree that Hunter was scarred by war and death I don't agree with the way he talked to Elyssa most of the time. A woman deserves respect and somethings were just too much. I Would have done a lot of other things in her place like slapp him a few times. She should have been a bit stronger. All in all it is a good romance novel, it is fast paced and satisfied me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall Good Book, July 26, 2001

While there were a few times I felt the hero was overly harsh with Elyssa, calling her a whore because of some stuff he'd overheard in the local bar or whatever - and doing so until he has proof of her virginity - the rest was terrific.

The romance of the novel if very well-done overall and despite the aforementioned harsh words the hero comes across sympathetically. I found the end satifying as well - the guy finally gets his own words about lust and love thrown back at him. I definitely enjoyed his conversion.

By the way, the sequel to this, Winter Fire is a must-read, better in my opinion. Don't miss it!

3.0 out of 5 stars NOT A VERY GOOD BOOK, May 23, 2004

I THOUGHT I WOULD LIKE "AUTUMN LOVER" WHEN I BOUGHT IT, AND ACTUALLY IT WAS A GOOD BOOK IN THE BEGINNING, BUT WHEN I GOT TO THE MIDDLE OF THE BOOK, I STOPPED LIKING IT. I DIDN'T LIKE THE WAY HUNTER HUMILIATED ELYSSA THINKING SHE WAS NOT A VIRGIN. THE REST OF THE STORY DIDN'T GET ANY BETTER EITHER. THEY KEPT HAVING SEX, BUT NOT OUT OF LOVE, ONLY FOR LUST. AND DESPITE HUNTER HUMILIATING ELYSSA, SHE STILL LIKES HUNTER AND WANT TO BE CLOSE TO HIM!
I DON'T RECOMMEND THIS BOOK TO ANYONE. SAVE YOUR MONEY.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, August 1, 2000
By A Customer
Another wonderful Lowell story. As an administrator in higher education, I can appreciate the value of the research that Ms. Lowell must do for these historical novels. It is quite thorough and so realistic that I can smell the animals, taste the beans and coffee, and feel the bullets whizzing by my head! And, of course, Hunter is the perfect rugged hero who is determined to resist the lady, but cannot do so. This initial personality conflict creates great sexual tension. The sequel to this story, Winter Fire, may be even better, but read Autumn Lover first.

2.0 out of 5 stars Started Good, But!, August 3, 2001

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Started out holding my interest, but as the story progressed, I became quite tired and bored with Hunter's constant opinion of Sassy as a flirt, etc. The level of writing became intellectually simple, a story more for the adolescent population. It was a reminder of how women were, and are still to some extent, blamed for man's lust, desire, physical reaction, etc. Men, all of us, need to be more accountable for our behaviors and feelings and stop blaming things outside ourselves. I have Winter Fire and I hope it's better than this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Definite Page Turner, October 16, 1999

I couldn't wait to get to the next chapter. This was my first Lowell book and I wasn't disappointed. I actually went out and bought the sequel "Winter Fire", I enjoyed that one just as much. I was sorry to see that this was the end of the Maxwell brothers, wish there were a few more! I would read anything by Ms. Lowell she's a talented writer that gets your attention from the first page.

1.0 out of 5 stars I put this book down..., June 30, 2008
after a 100 pages or so. The "hero" was a misogynist who constantly called the "heroine" a "little flirt" and he had no respect for her (and all women) due to his past wife's affairs. I just could not get into this book. This was my first experience with this author.
