Review

"I love this book! What a beautiful testimony to the agelessness of love." --Marianne Williamson, author of The Age of Miracles, A Return to Love, Enchanted Love, Everyday Grace

"This is a special and rewarding book. The fact is, people can love as deeply at 70 as they did at 20 and Autumn Romance documents that face exquisitely. Here are real love stories, each more inspiring than the last.

Autumn Romance would make a wonderful present for people who have stopped believing in romance or for couples who want to celebrate their relationship, of any age. The photographs alone are worth the price!" --Dr. Pepper Schwartz, Love, Sex and Relationship Expert, AARP

"Reading Autumn Romance is like watching a Frank Capra film ... uplifting and upholding our belief in the common day miracle. Here are the role models we've been waiting for and here is a coffee table book you'll be proud to leave on display and a book you'll be happy to read, perhaps with a loved one. It would make a beautiful gift for just about anyone.

Reading it, I thought, "Denker just keeps topping herself! Just the stories would have been enough, but there are the photos, then the advice about love. This book is an absolute treasure." --Michael Brickey, Director, Ageless Lifestyles Institute, Ohio; author of Defy Aging, 52 Baby Steps to Stay Young

About the Author

Carol Denker, the author, is a true believer in new beginnings. Not only did she find her own passionate love at age 62 (her story is the last one in the book), she began a third career, writing, at age 55.

Carol holds a B.F.A. degree from Queens College, a Certificate in Psychiatric Art Therapy from Hahnemann Medical University, a Masters degree in Humanistic Education from Marywood College and a Masters degree in Psychological Services from the University of Pennsylvania.

For most of her adult life, she worked as an art and group therapist. She also directed a parenting program in North Philadelphia for five years. Her first professional writing job was as staff writer for the Star newspapers in Philadelphia. She became an editor for the Star and then spent two years as a freelance reporter for several Philadelphia newspapers.

In 2004, Carol helped found The Spirit, a prizewinning independent community newspaper in Philadelphia that she ran as editor-in-chief for its first three years.

Carol is also a longtime portrait artist and painter; her commissioned and original work hangs in homes throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey; her work can be seen on her website A Portrait by Carol.

More About the Author

The thought of a book about Romance Tips for people over 50, wasn't ever anything I expected to take over my life, but it did.

At age 55, Carol Denker answered an ad, "Writer Wanted," in her local paper; soon she knew she'd come home. Covering daily stories, she was struck with the extraordinary courage and beauty within the lives of "ordinary" people. This was what Carol had always thought about--and now she could convey it in words.

For many years,Carol conveyed that same sense in images. (Her portraits and original work can be seen at www.aportraitbycarol.com.)

She trained to be a teacher, then an art therpaist, earning a Masters degree in Education at Marywood University and a Masters degree in Psychology at Penn. For most of her adult life, she worked as a group therapist in clinics and hospitals in Pennsylvania. Then her life changed drastically--her story is the last one in "Autumn Romance"--and she turned to writing.

Shortly after she answered that ad, Carol became editor at the Star newspaper; a few years later, she and three others founded The Spirit newspaper, which began garnering awards under her leadership. At age 63, Carol began writing "Autumn Romance: Stories and Portraits of Love after 50" and published it two years later.

There has been way too much written about the chances, or perhaps lack of, that are possible for people over 50 finding love. All the chatter, the magazInes, even movies feature the young with taut bodies and perfect complexions and full heads of hair. Love seems to offer infinite possibilities to these perfect young people. As we approach 50, or ye gods, 60 or 80 (!), we think, or we're taught to think, we've HAD our turn at love, and we invite ourselves into the grazing pasture as we wait for death. Finally! A book by Carol Denker, unabashedly titled, AUTUMN ROMANCE depicts 29 love-filled and hope-infused stories of couples all over 50, finding love in lots of unexpected and some ordinary places. Some were earnestly looking, some were taken by surprise, and each, in their unique way, found not just amazing love, but love, in many cases, so much better than they'd experienced in the past or certainly in excess of anything they'd imagined. If anything is to be learned from reading these stories, it is that with a change of attitude, a willingness to take care of one's self and pursue your dream and to be willing to share your life with another, great and abiding love is possible.....at any age. Thank you, Carol Denker, for a beautiful book.

This book is as moving and powerful and beautiful as love itself. The photographs alone are worth the price! There is so much in it--the beautiful photos and pages, the beautifully written stories, the Advice at the end. But mostly there are the stories and each one says so much. The people are all different, from different states and backgrounds. There is a wonderful story of a gay man who finally found himself. These are ordinary people who are brave, honest and....well, not so ordinary. Love comes like a blessing for them at unexpected times and ages and so we understand, it can come for us too. This book is so lovingly put together--it will be a great addition to any coffee table. It makes a beautiful gift but you will also want to read the stories over and over for yourself.

Carol Denker knows the human heart better than any cardiologist! My hope is that every divorced, widowed or lonely person in the U.S. will read Autumn Romance: Stories and Portraits of Love after 50 soon. This books is a source of comfort and hope for everyone who has given up on love.

Denker, a writer with a deliciously dry sense of humor, met the man of her dreams when she was in her 60's. This experience led her to travel the nation seeking the most compelling mature love stories that she could find. The result is a book that is beautifully written, lavishly illustrated---and full of surprises.

The 29 couples profiled in this book are as diverse and interesting as America itself and readers will never forget them. My favorites are Vernon and Judy Lee of Denver, Colorado. Vernon is a physician who spent so many years living up to the expectations of others, that he forgot about his own happiness. His transition from a man who was quietly miserable to a person who finds joy with the kind and sensitive Judy is wonderful to behold. Don't forget to explore Carol Denker's own remarkable story----it's the last profile in this remarkable book.

As a reader and a librarian, I love this book. You will too.

The way Ms. Denker tells their stories and the character's she selected for Autumn Romance are very interesting and have given a couple of my single friends hope. If you are an individual in this age group and single this will inspire you. If like myself, you're still married after 43 years you will enjoy hearing Ms. Denker's style and depiction of these amazing love stories. This is such an easy read that we keep it on our coffee table so our guest's can also enjoy them. DJMoniot

Autumn Romance is a remarkable book by Carol Denker. It is a tribute to the miracle of love after 50, just when many people think it is unattainable. The stories are beautifully written and the fact that they are based on each couple's actual experience only adds to the inspiration and celebration of life and love the book so beautifully and graphically portrays. This is a must have book for enjoying and sharing. I have also given it as a gift to several people who were most enthusiastic and thankful.

In our youth-oriented culture, not enough credit is given to life experience and how it makes us more attractive over time. We look passed the slightly worn surface and see the light and the possibility of steadfast, practiced love underneath. Autumn Romance celebrates love found later in life, after we realize all those trivial things we thought were important really aren't. What's important is commitment, honest communication, true caring, and the ability to have fun. Playfulness and passion are two qualities that serve us well in later years, and they are found in abundance in this book. So if you thought you had missed the boat on love, think again. Be who you are and be proud of it. When you stop looking and start celebrating life, love will find you. These stories tell it all.
