I've been reading romance novels for nearly 30 years. I'm 43. I've read a LOT of them. One thing they almost all have in common is... Romance.

While this was a very good story, I would not classify it as romance. There is budding interest, but I expect more than a kiss or two and a grope that leads to nowhere. Longing looks at hot bodies also don't qualify, in my mind, as romance.

Now, you label this an YA or NA, where there is expected to be little to no actual romantic development? I'm all over it. The story itself was great. The characters were great. I liked them all, except the ones I wasn't supposed to like. And had I gone into it with the expectation of budding romance but not a full-on love story, this would probably be a four-star review.

I just don't think there were enough traditional 'romance' markers in this book to correctly label it as such, and I was incredibly disappointed when I reached the 94% mark thinking FINALLY they were going to do something about their attraction... and then the book ended. It was tied up nicely and leaves lots of room for following books, but it ended with little more than a cuddle and a kiss. NOT the way I expect a 'romance novel' to end.

All that being said, if you like just a touch of romance and lots of adventure, then you're golden. But if you're looking forward to hot shifter romance, I wouldn't recommend it. I guess it depends on what you're looking for.

3.0 out of 5 stars Quick, fun read July 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm torn between three and four stars. The book starts off pretty well and jumps right into the action and doesn't really stop. I'm not a huge fan of romance and there wasn't too much in this to turn me off. Some flirting, wishful thinking, things like that. Enough to keep it interesting but it doesn't detract from the story. There weren't a lot of mindless details that I usually skip over. I liked the characters. Probably some of the secondary characters over the main. I'll take Peter over Blake. I really like the different take on the whole shifter lore. I'd get the second book to see what happens.

I received a free copy in return for a fair review

2.0 out of 5 stars Cliffhanger are the devil June 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am not a fan of this new trend of the cliffhanger. The author should have finished the book and continued with the other characters in the next book. I got this one free and will not pay for the next one. Plus the book was very slow and boring.

I received this book complimentary from the author in exchange for agreeing to write an honest review.

In Book One of this new series, there are a number of characters to meet. The characters were pretty likeable, and I found myself rooting for the good guys throughout. I did find the alternating third person points of view just a little bit distracting a couple times while I was trying to remember whose POV I was currently reading since the characters are involved in a tightly woven web. I can see why the author chose this narration to further the storyline, which did end up working well overall. I really like how this author delves into her characters and thinks ahead about what real people would do or say. I find myself wondering ahead only to find that Marissa Farrar is already heading there!

I have been reading most of her works and enjoying them very much. I typically prefer books about the paranormal, time travel, supernatural, apocalyptic, post-apocalyptic, etc. and Marissa Farrar doesn't let me down. I will concede that the Serenity/Alone series and this new Autumn/Spirit Shifter series both do tend to have just a slightly syrupy feel to them. However, please note that I'm not a typical "chick flick" kind of gal, so I do realize that most women really love this kind of media. That said, both series truly are quite enjoyable and take me away for several hours, which is ultimately my goal for reading the types of books that I gravitate towards. I did like her slightly darker Underlife and The Dark Road just a little bit more, but I will definitely continue to follow this enjoyable new series through as well. Really liking this author and so glad to have found her!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read! July 27, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I received free ebook from author for honest review.
I loved Marissa Farrar's Serenity series and the first book in her new series The Spirit Shifters looks to be another home run.
The premise of shapeshifters as spirit guides is wholly believable, especially as it is not a hereditary trait. I was caught up in the story from page one and finished wanting book 2!
I highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and ready for Book 2. November 10, 2013

Format:Kindle Edition
I received this book from the author for an honest review.

I hope book 2 comes out quickly, the exciting story has to go on. There is still so many possibilities for this story's development. Well written and fast paced the author has your attention very quickly. Drawn into the world of corrupt military men, DNA alterations and shifters, you get lost in the pages of the book.
Filled with excitement, adventure and romance to keep you engaged till the last page. The characters believable as we explore this world of the paranormal, a great fictitious story.
In Autumn's quest, to find the missing boy and her missing friend she experienced things vastly different then in the lab she normally worked in. She had to trust men that came to her rescue. And, did I mention that said men were drop-dead gorgeous, not? Well ladies, it is true. Tall, dark and extremely handsome with enough testosterone to keep you melting. Not to talk about the bulging muscles, the wide chests and tree-trunk thighs on regular display.
As the story progress, you learn more about Blake, a Native American, ex-marine and now head of security as he tried to save the day. His brooding composure a constant reminder that not all was well, as he devoured Autumn with his eyes. Doing the right thing even when his family disagreed.
Chogan, his cousin came to the city to find a missing woman from the reservation, and this is where all the fun starts.
The author did a wonderful job, creating this unique story, your imagination running wildly as shifters appeared, mesmerizing you as they fight for their cause. From eagles to bears, mountain lions and wolves, your attention are captured till the very end.

What if it was possible to "change" into an animal? Would you be accepted or ruthlessly hunted? See what happens when extraordinary becomes ordinary.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth it.
I have no clue how this book got good stars. She's a good writer, but not for paranormal books. It was just lacking in so many ways.

More About the Author

Marissa Farrar is a multi-published fantasy and horror author. She was born in Devon, England, has travelled all over the world, and has lived in both Australia and Spain. She now resides in the countryside with her husband, two children, a crazy Spanish dog, two rescue cats and six hens and ten goldfish. Despite returning to England, she daydreams of one day being able to split her time between her home country and the balmy, white sandy beaches of Spain.

Even though she's been writing stories since she was small and held dreams of being a writer, her initial life plan went a different way.

In her youth, inspired by James Herriot, she decided to become a vet, and would regularly bring home new pets to her weary parents. Upon discovering her exams were never going to get her into a veterinary degree, she ended up studying Zoology. Once she completed her degree and realised she'd spent the majority trying to find time to write, she decided to follow her dream of being an author. Seven years later, she was published and two years after that she was able to say goodbye to the day job.

However, she's continued to collect animals!

Marissa is the author of four novels, including the dark vampire 'Serenity' series. Her fifth novel, Underlife, a dark fantasy set beneath the streets of London, will be published August 2012.

Her short stories have been accepted for a number of anthologies including, Their Dark Masters, Red Skies Press, Masters of Horror: Damned If You Don't, Triskaideka Books; and 2013: The Aftermath, Pill Hill Press.
