"Available Darkness" is the first book in a Vampire fantasy trilogy by co-authors David Wright and Sean Platt. This Kindle e-book was a 477 Kb download and was priced at $4.99 at the time of writing this review.

Background... I became interested in this novel as I'd really enjoyed the "Yesterday's Gone" series by the same authors. I wanted to try this new full length novel and so downloaded the Kindle edition.

***MAJOR SPOILERS***

This is the tale of three brothers that come from a different world, all of who have different personal agendas. One (Jacob) wishes to keep a portal open to the 'home' world to bring back an army and conquer Earth. Another, (John, our main hero) wishes to prevent this from happening and the last (Caleb), who has had his memory erased so he's unaware of the other two. Jacob is actively seeking both John and Caleb as they have information that is vital to his plans. In addition, they're all are a new breed of vampire who have different 'requirements' than the traditional vampires of most tales.

Some thoughts...

The Pros:

1.) an interesting premise using a variation of the normal vampire model.

2.) lots of page turning action and intrigue...not much down time (see Cons: 2. below)

3.) some nice character development. I really liked what the authors did with Larry and Abigail, as well as John and Caleb.

The Cons:

1.) I found the plot (early on) confusing... I started to wonder... did I miss something? It wasn't until Part 3 (74% the way through) that some explanations were given to shed some light on the various goings-on in the previous chapters.

2.) as mentioned above (Pros: 2.

I must admit that I was reluctant to purchase Available Darkness simply because I'm not really a fan of the whole "vampire genre" that has exploded in the last few years. However, because I am a big Sean Platt/David Wright fan, I took a chance. Boy, am I glad I did. This book made me a fan of the vampire genre.

The characters are interesting and the reader really cares about them and what they have gone through. The plot is full of twists and turns that keep the reader on the edge of their seat.

When I purchased this book, I didn't realize that it was the first in a series. That bums me out because I am so anxious to find out what happens to John & Abigail & Caleb & Hope. The next book is supposed to be out in 2012. Hopefully, sooner in the year rather than later.

If you are a fan of the vampire genre, get this book. If you aren't a fan of the vampire genre, this book will definitely make you a fan!

I am a big-time mystery book lover and decided to take a chance on this new thriller. I was totally amazed at not only the story line, but the gift the writers have of adding some comedy to the edge of your seat story. It was hard to put the book down actually. Really love the writers style. Looking forward to the 2nd book of the trilogy!!

I am loving everything that these guys write it seems. This is an earlier work I think but it does not suffer at all! It is very well written and a great story. I became really attached to the characters and they were developed very, very well. One of the best books I have read all year and a great vampire tale with a great modification of the vampire origin and their rules.

Let me preface my review by saying this: Available Darkness is a good book. It is definitely above average, but sadly, it falls short of greatness. It's a interesting take on vampirism, the characters are gripping, the plot is intriguing, and acts one and three are both great.

Sadly, act two falls short. It's quite frankly a massive dump of text exposition, which feels out of place considering the tone and mood set in act one and act three. But aside from this hiccup, the book overall is still very good. Sadly, it falls short of what it could be. I look forward to the following books in the series, and I hope that the authors manage to escape having another block of text act.

Oh yes, and there is a random sex scene in the middle of the book. Just a fair heads up.

This story takes a vampire tale and puts a new twist on it. It starts out action-filled and ends the same way. The continuation is coming in 2012 and I can't wait to see what's in store for John and Abigail. As with these authors' past history, the characters in this tale are so well developed and real. The reader is consistently lead through the pages with suspenseful word smithing. Great job! Loved every word of it!

Sean and David have produced a decidedly different twist on the vampire concept. The main problem for me is that it's the first book of a series and I really hate waiting for the "next" book to come out. Available Darkness, though, is a novel that can stand on its own merits without having to read any more in the series.
