Readers looking for engaging, complex characters and stories told in a rich and distinctive style will find both in Phillip Gardner's AVAILABLE LIGHT. There's an impressive range of subjects here that build on the risks and rewards found in Gardner's previous collections, SOMEBODY WANTS SOMEBODY DEAD and SOMEONE TO CRAWL BACK TO. His story "Brother" has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Read it and you'll understand why. AVAILABLE LIGHT is full of stories in the best sense of the word, and they are stories that matter. Highly recommended.

Format: Paperback
Known primarily to readers of the prestigious literary journals and quarterlies where probably close to 50 of his stories have been published to date, Phillip Gardner deserves a far wider audience. I think he may be as recognized someday as the bard of NASCAR country as William Faulkner is for his fictional depiction of Yoknapatawpha County.

In his extraordinarily rich and growing body of work are at least four short story collections that I’m aware of, as well as several excellent screenplays. Writing with a very light touch in a sort of neo-Southern Gothic prose, Phillip has a superb command of atmosphere and dialogue as well as compassion for his expansive cast of unforgettable characters. They often hold court in the Paradise Lounge, a small-town Southern bar where lovers and losers search for the remnants of love. His stories are alternately funny, bizarre, tragic and elegiac. We come away from them moved and enriched by Phillip’s colorful, meticulous portrayal of his particular place in our tumultuous time.

Real storytelling with real and complex characters provide the heart of this fine collection. The range of subjects and the variety in the voices and mood of these stories especially compel.

Love this book. The first story, "Get Drunk and Screw," will take your breath away. Makes a great stocking stuffer, too.
