What a find! Before hearing this ensemble play in San Francisco last year, I had never heard traditional Armenian music before. If you've never heard traditional Armenian music, think along the lines of traditional Greek and Middle Eastern music. The members of this ensemble are passionate about Armenian music, and that passion is clearly heard throughout this live recording.

There are several songs where individual traditional instruments are played unaccompanied. Those solos are hauntingly beautiful and vividly bring to mind images of Armenia from centuries ago. Also, the spirited folk dance songs, like "Tamara," will have you tapping your feet to the beat.

The vocalist's operatic voice brings a sound of love and yearning to the songs she accompanies. Her solo, "Siroon Manoushag," is quite an emotional treat. Like me, you may not understand anything she's saying, but the enclosed foldout has a short description of each song which helps to put yourself in the right frame of mind before listening to each song.

This is a great CD if you're interested in hearing authentic Armenian folk and dance music. The ensemble's other CD, "Echoes From The Past" is also quite good.
