I tested this player and Philips DVP 642K simultaneously for two weeks and saw every movie CD on both players (believe me, watching movie is hard work ;-)

Right now DXP-1000 competes in North American market directly with Philips DVP 642 in USA market. Both product sells at same price US$77 and have similar offerings at first glance, but as you use the product, differences emerge. Unlike Philips DVP 642K this product is yet to become available in rest of world as company is still working on having distribution tie ups with importers around world. In Canada DXP-1000 is available for CAD$129.99 which is approx US$108.00.

Q: What formats/media plays on Avayon DXP-1000?

A: Almost any CD you throw at DXP-1000, it plays. CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, MP3, WMA 7/8/9, MPEG4, XViD, Divx 3.0/4.0/5.0, JPEG and VCD formats and media are supported.

It supports subtitles in .srt, .sub and .smi format. In Audio connections, it supports all possibilities like output channels 2.0/5.1, DTS, Dolby Digital. It supports Karaoke with 2 mic sockets.

Video connections are S-Video, Composite Video and Component Video.

It supports progressive scan on NTSC and PAL to take advantage of expensive plasma TV's you may have or may buy in future.

Q: Philips is very famous brand with wide sales and support network, how does Avayon DXP-1000 compares to Philips player?

A: Philips DVP 642K we tested couldn't play subtitles on Divx/XViD movies. Avayon DXP-1000 plays subtitles from all CDs in all three subtitle file formats.

Remote of Philips is small but uses many key for dual functions making it confusing and not good for quick action. Avayon has long ugly stick like remote but once you are past its looks, it has very good functionality. It has separate key for every function and you can do anything just with single click.

Philips player doesn't support WMA format and will play only MP3 music files. Avayon supports WMA format.

Display function of Philips player is in very bad shape. It won't show you length of movie or duration of movie left to be seen etc. Avayon has done better job with its display function, it shows all durations one needs to know. Avayon player though has problem with display function while playback of VCDs, once you use on screen display function even if you switch it off display doesn't go off and till you finish watching that VCD frozen duration display will be on.

Both players support NTSC and PAL thru menu selections.

Both players also support 110-240V to make it work anywhere in world.

Power cord of both player go straight inside players and that makes it not user replaceable since it doesn't use socket behind DVD Player system.

Test unit we got of Avayon DXP-1000 had power cord length of only 5 feet which is short for most part of world where height of power outlet is 5 feet on wall and DVD player usually sits near ground below TV. But current batch of DXP-1000 comes with longer cord. If you are in USA you may not notice this since power outlets are very close to floor.

Q: Is Avayon DXP-1000 region free? Will it play all DVDs?

A: No, but it wont take more then 10 second to make it region free like any other DVD player available today. You just need to google for its codes to be applied on remote control. No DVD player manufacturer can sell DVD players region free out of the box as they are prohibited from doing so to avoid DVDs of one region from playing in another region. Same applies to DVD playback software or DVD ROM Drives, but this strategy has failed as once you buy any of this product, it can be made region free and any DVD you buy anywhere in world, you can play it.

Q: What about firmware update?

A: Yes, like any other Divx capable player this player is also acting like computer and needs to be updated with improved firmware every few months. But currently available DXP-1000 players are up to date with latest firmware and one doesn't need to update if before starting to use it. But after few months you should check www.avayon.com and download latest firmware and update the player with it.

Q: Avayon is new and small company compared to Philips, should one still go for this player?

A: Advantage with Avayon and other such new/smaller startups is that their response and service is very quick as they lack huge corporate hierarchy to slow down customer support or product development. Also company is very receptive to product feedback and open to making changes. After our initial feedback about shorter power cord, company immediately changed length of power cord. And don't be surprised when you email or call company if President of company himself responds to your problems.

Q: Will Hollywood release movies in Divx format?

A: A news article in NEWS.COM which refers to likelihood of two studio's giving their blessing to this format. If that happens you may see very soon movies available officially in this format. Till then you will have to rely on independent movies offered on net for few dollars, or convert them from DVDs using software like Gordian Knot or download them using P2P networks like Kazaa. You need to be careful with this as you may be breaking the law by converting copyrighted DVD into divx or downloading them off Kazaa. If Hollywood blesses Divx format then you can imagine iTune like service offering downloads of any movies for few dollars and you can then burn it on CD and play it

I'm a bit short on time or I could go on forever about my experience with this company. First, I had a question about my machine and I called the company and someone answered right away. A real person who speaks English talked to me about my question. They knew the machine and were not reading a canned response off a computer screen. This person was located in the USA if you can believe it. It just so happened that someone from the company lived about an hour from me. He wanted to see how I was using the player and how it worked for me. Ok, you're going to think that this next thing is out of a Hollwood moive but it is absolutly true. THE GUY CAME TO MY HOUSE to help me with my player! This player plays anything I throw at it and is a quality unit. It is upgradeable too! Philips, Sony and RCA are all the same. They don't care if they put out products that don't work. These guys do. Buy one of these units and let's keep this kind of service going. It's very rare these days.

I purchased this DVD player for its ability to play Nero video more than its ability to play DIVX. Although it claims to be able to do so, it does not do so correctly. Nero video is encoded at various speeds. Regardless of which speed a video is encoded at, this player fails to play it correctly -always too slow with the audio and video not synching correctly. The FAQs say to press FWD or RWD buttons to correct this but the problem remains. After numerous attempts to contact Avayon, both by phone and email, I now realize I've just blown $70. Other issues are that the DVD player itself is extremely noisey and the video is always magnified when a disc first plays. It has been less than 2 months since I've ordered this device (5/12/06). It took about 7 days to arrive, another week spent trying to troubleshoot things, and now 3 weeks of trying to get hold of Avayon. Based on the poor quality of the product and the complete lack of support, the DXP1000 wouldn't be worth the purchase even at a quarter of the price. UPDATE 7/27/06: Avayon finally contacted me and sent a replacement unit. Apparently, you cannot play Nero video if it's encoded with 5.1 surround sound. Switched to DIVX for everything I want 5.1 sound from. There is nothing in any of the Avayon advertising that expresses limitations with the Nero video. There is also no possibility of an upgrade that will fix this issue because the problem is with the chipset Avayon players use. Once I spoke with customer service, I feel that the future of Avayon is good but they need to communicate the details of their merchandise better and the speed of their customer service responses needs to improve.

I was having some trouble with my Avayon player after about 8 months and out of warranty so I called the company in New Hampshire and talked with this real nice guy who while we talked was already dispatching a new replacement to me. No questions asked!!! What a company!!! The player like everyone else says plays everything I put in it. No player I ever had comes close to this DXP-1000 from Avayon.com. They now sell the small portable type DVD player as well, and I will be getting one from them soon. Support this small American company. We need more like them.

This thing was a real find. It plays everything I've thrown at it. If you download something in DivX you don't have to render it into a DVD or VCD, just leave it as a regular DivX files and burn it to a CD, this thing will play these files right from the disk. I've played DVD-R and DVD+R disks, also DVD-R DL and it doesn't have a problem with any of them.

One little thing I've noticed is that every once in a while it will become unresponsive. I turn the power off in the back and turn it back on and it's fine. This hasn't happened in a while and could be related to something else in my setup I suppose. One other thing is that you do have to point the remote directly at the unit for it to work, it seems to have a slim range of where it will detect the remote. I still think this is worth buying, it's a great player.

I was bought this player as a birthday present as I needed a multiregion player as I am from the UK. I have now had THREE of them breakdown on me. Customer Service are helpful however it cant take away from the fact that their dvd players are very poor. I have the same problem everytime, normally after about a month a dvd will freeze and then it will say no disc and it cant be used again. I am giving up now and throwing it in the bin

This DVD player worked great for about 6 months but now it says NO DISC for any DVD, production or created, MP3 , audio, anything. Now it goes into the bin. Buy a better player, not worth US $ 70 for the short time it works.

Before I went out and bought a DVD player, I wanted to make sure it would play DivX movies. So I searched around and found some players that supported DivX.
I found this player, and looked at the specifications for it, and immediately I had found the perfect DVD player for me.
When it got here, it did not disappoint me. It really does nearly every format out there- but the absolute best part is you no longer have to burn DVD video or video CD's to watch movies/videos on the player.
All you do is throw any file that is of a supported format on a CD/DVD and put it in the player. It shows up with a list of what's on the disc, and an icon on the side to show what type of file it is.

Very few things are wrong with this player, other than the fact that there doesn't seem to be a way to scroll the video name box so you can see the full name of the clip you are watching.

Best customer Service I've encountered in some time!

This product had more features than any other company and at a very good price.


Had a few questions and called their number and got one quick and responsive reply. Maybe because their in New Hampshire.

This DXP-100 plays em all - CD, DVD, MP3, MPEG, AVI, JPEG's and of course DIV-X.

Feature full and easy to use from the GITGO.

Highly recommend both player and Company.

This unit wins HANDS DOWN against the RCA competition the DRC240N. It plays all DVDs +/- R/RWs, VCD, SVCD, RAW MPEG DISCS... If you want a unit after the warranty expires to receive upgrades in firmware for divx movies and compatible to play DVDS from 1 - 6 and you can set it to REGION 0 (PLAY DISCS FROM ALL REGIONS)!!!. Get this unit. If you also want to do your karoake bit use the mic inputs. I use my mic inputs to plug in my bass, guitar to jam along with my cds.
I know the name AVAYON is not a popular name... but both players are made in China, and RCA/GE/SHINCO are same product and for the price this AVAYON is much better deal than the RCA. I returned my RCA DRC240N after comparing both AVAYON and RCA and calling RCA to learn their product has no upgrades and no future plans to upgrade the DIVX OR XVID firmware... Get the AVAYON at B&H Photo or J&R Music in NYC.
