Ave Maria - Celine, June 27, 2009
This review is from: Ave Maria (MP3 Download)
Celine's voice carries an expressive emotion with a power and beauty worthy of this classic, timeless piece. This rendition is unique, in that it features some of the original English lyrics. The original words come from an English poem by Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) titled "Lady of the Lake". Schubert translated the words to German and the Latin lyrics were added later to adapt the work for liturgical use. The English verse is translated as:
"Ave Maria! Ave Maria! maiden mild!
Listen to a maiden's prayer!
Thou canst hear though from the wild,
Thou canst save amid despair.
Safe may we sleep beneath thy care,
Though banish'd, outcast and reviled -
Maiden! hear a maiden's prayer;
Mother, hear a suppliant child!
