First I just want to point out that the product I recieved is slightly different from the one pictured. It is blue, not gold, and has a standard white tip which does not appear to be static dissipative. Neither is a big deal for me, but the lack of an ESD tip may bother some. I purchased from Amazon, I can not say if the other seller has an identical item or not.

I purchased this pump after the one I got at RadioShack a year ago broke. The RadioShack pump broke because the part that stops the plunger at the end of its upward travel is made of plastic. In this item it is made of aluminum, and I believe it will prove more durable.

Compared to the RadioShack model, the tip on this one has a bit larger opening (3.6mm vs 2.6mm). The parts from the remains of the RadioShack pump are interchangable with this one, including the tips. However, with the thinner tips the plunger rod can get stuck if there is any significant solder buildup. The plunger from the RadioShack model also fits, and swapping them solves the problem. So, if you're also replacing the same pump, you have that option.

However, the wider tip works fine most of the time, and will really only be a problem in tight spaces. Also, it can actually be an advantage in many situations.

So, this is a good, basic, solder sucker. It's even better if you are replacing a broken one from RadioShack, because you will already have spare parts.

I purchased this solder sucker as a replacement for another one which I had depleted the teflon tip on and am very pleased with the performance of this sucker as compared with the prior one. It appears to work nearly equally well when placed either flush OR at an oblique angle. So far in the few weeks I've had this item, I have fully stripped about 20 or so very crowded circuit boards and the tip is still in great shape too. When I got this one, I bought two as replacement tips don't appear to be easy to come by and even if they were, given the exceedingly low price of a replacement unit, I suspect that new tips would be uneconomical. With how well this one is holding up so far, I have no idea when I am going to actually need to use the second unit that I bought with it!

I would recommend this item to anyone without hesitation.

It's a great idea, but it doesn't work as well as I hoped. The problem is that the diameter of the tip is too big. The inside diameter is okay, but because the tip material is so thick, the outside diameter is too wide. It wouldn't fit over a pin because the adjacent pin was in the way. Of course, it probably works fine if the pin you're trying to desolder is out in the open, but if your trying to desolder a component with multiple pins, it's a disappointment. Yes, you can fit the tip over two adjacent pins at once, but it's not easy to do. I ended up having to use desoldering braid.

I bought this sucker because it seemed to be higher quality than the others available on Amazon. Unfortunately, I was wrong. It worked for about 15 minutes before the button stopped working. While it worked, it got the job done.. A shame it was so short lived.

FYI, the pump I received was blue in color (as stated in the item's description) not gold as pictured.

You can find these anywhere. They are handy for getting liquid solder off printed circuit boards and component leads. Easy to use, easy to clean.

Decent solder sucker. All metal. Bounces a little when you push the button but overall nice sucker. It is the first one I have ever used so I have nothing else to compare it to; but I am happy with it.

This desoldering pump is consistent with pretty much all desoldering pumps of this style. It has a good strong spring, and works very well and just as it should. The tip is plastic which is a good thing when you’re dealing with electronics. I’ve never seen a desoldering pump remove all the solder in one action but then, I’ve never seen desoldering wick do that either. It’s a good tool at a good price, 5 stars.

I needed to replaced a defective microswitch in a Logitech trackball. To do this I needed to remove the solder holding the switch, and the Aven 17537 proved adequate for the job. I've used it a few times on various other projects and it has yet to fail me. There are better 'solder suckers' on the market, but so far the Aven has worked every time I've needed it.
