A horrible edition,

This review is from: Avengers: First to Last (The Avengers) (Hardcover)
The hardcover collection AVENGERS: FIRST TO LAST provides something like "bookends" to the saga of the Avengers. It collects the backup stories from Avengers Classic #1-12 and the 2-issue Last Avengers Story. The Avengers Classic tales, written and illustrated by a variety of folks you wouldn't associate with one of Marvel's flagship titles, were designed to fit in with the early adventures of the Avengers, and they do so fairly well. As I already have the early Avengers in Essential format, it's nice to have these extra tales under one cover; however, any pleasure I get from them is countered by Marvel's sorry reprint quality of The Last Avengers Story. Peter David and Ariel Olivetti amazed me with this miniseries upon its original release, as it is one of the darkest stories I have ever read from Marvel, with death and destruction around every corner. The mid-'90s collected edition is long out of print, so this hardcover is now the only way to conveniently own it. Unfortunately, it appears that Marvel simply scanned the pages from the comics. While that trick may work with line art, it doesn't do painted work any favors, and as a result, Olivetti's once-beautiful images look pixellated and faded. I continue to question both Marvel and DC's commitment to their hardcover reprint series. For this price, fans deserve more.
