Early Perez Avengers, December 15, 2011
This review is from: Avengers Legends Volume 3: George Perez Book 1 TPB (Avengers Visionaries) (Paperback)
Maybe 3-1/2 stars. George Perez is often best known for his work on
New Teen Titans and Avengers. He's had at least 2 major stints with that latter team. This paperback represents a few issues from the earliest stint.
This is a fun yet visually unrefined collection. I'm not usually a fan of 70's style art, but there are a few creators who interest me to the point that I'm willing to check out their early work anyway.
George Perez is one of them. His take on Marvel's Avengers isn't universally praised as being the absolute best, but whenever greatest Avengers artists are mentioned, he's usually in the discussion. In my opinion this is deservedly so. This volume, along with his 1998
Avengers Assemble, Vol. 1, are among my favorites of his work with these characters.
This volume contains material from 8 issues. 2 are king-sized annuals (6 and 8), and then we get issues 161, 162, 194, 195, 196, and 8 pages from 201. Highlights here for me include the 1st ever appearance of Taskmaster(!). He appears on the last page of issue 195, and then his first full issue is 196. A visually interesting character, many people might not know he was created by Michelinie & Perez. Also here in 162: the 1st ever appearance of the robotic Jocasta, created by Shooter & Perez.
Perez is famous for his nearly insane attention to visual detail. It's meaningful detail I'm specifically referring to. Many artists will throw down a million little microscopic lines on their pages in a somewhat subjective, visual pattern kind of way, and it's often referred to as detailed work. But that's just suggestive detail- not meaningful detail. Perez does the meaningful kind, meaning that when he draws an office space, he depicts every desk, chair, monitor, keyboard, cups, pens and assorted office papers in minute fashion. It's representational detail, and not just suggestive. Some people like this about Perez and some people don't, but it's interesting to see here just how far back in his career this attention to detail goes.
The work here is from the mid to late 70's, and some of the issue covers feature a copyright date of 1980. My copy is titled Avengers Legends 3 George Perez, 2nd printing, copyright 2003. It has 160 pages. Original list price= 16.99. The paper quality is somewhat sturdy & glossy, so it's standing the test of time really well.
