Not Astro City, Not Marvels, May 11, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Avengers: The Morgan Conquest (Paperback)
I recently discovered Busiek's Astro City, and I ordered this graphic novel expecting a much, much deeper story.
This is a straightforward Avenger's comic book, written in a comic-book style (with excellent comic-book art by Perez). It's not in any sense groundbreaking, it doesn't offer a novel view point, and it doesn't develop the characters to any great degree. Everything's spelled out in captions, thought balloons, and comic-book dialog, with little subtext. It's not very "Busiek".
I heartily recommend Busiek's Astro City works and his amazing Marvels too. I don't recommend Avengers: The Morgan Conquest unless you're a mainstream comic fan looking for more Avengers action.

Avengers Assemble, July 3, 2000
This review is from: Avengers: The Morgan Conquest (Paperback)
Every Avenger ever participates in this tale. This is the tale that reintroduces the Avengers into the main spotlight of Super Hero books. The Avengers are the premier super hero team in all of comics and this group collects everyone who has ever been a member from the big three, Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man, to the minow members, Demolition Man, Sandman and Rage. See them all. They may not be fighting their toughest foe ever but this tale explains what it is to be an Avenger. Also the return of Wonderman is a real plus. I was excited the first time I read these books and could not put them down. If you love heroes this is the book for you.

Sorry, this one's weak, March 31, 2000
This review is from: Avengers: The Morgan Conquest (Paperback)
I'm a big fan of this book's writer (Kurt Busiek), so I was thrilled to discover this, another collection of his work. He's the kind of talent you expect to enjoy no matter what he's writing. This along with the first 2 reviews above really got me excited about this book though I've never been a big Avengers fan. I was disappointed. All the pieces are there on paper; a great writer, and some great art from George Perez. Unfortunately the story is extremely rudimentary and simple, serving only to show as many past Avengers characters as possible at one time. As such this book may be great for big time Avengers fans, but it offers little appeal or entertainment otherwise. This material may pass for "good" or even "great" in comparison to other Marvel superhero comics of recent years, but it lacks the spark that I enjoy so much in other recent superhero team comics such as Astro City and JLA. Astro City (Kurt Busiek's creation by the way) in particular I recommend strongly to anyone and everyone. Both Astro City and JLA have multiple trade paperbacks available.
