5.0 out of 5 stars Essential for all Avengers fans!, July 18, 2009

This review is from: Avengers: Nights of Wundagore (Paperback)
This TPB contains Avengers Vol. 1 #181-187 written by David Michelinie (of Iron Man: Demon in a Bottle fame) and drawn by John Byrne (X-men, FF, Avengers West Coast)

It's great to read old stories that are just as fresh as ones written today. This Avengers book will not dissapoint fans, especially since the story arc is so important to the future of the Avengers.

Things you get in this book:

- Henry Gyrich steps in and creates a new Avengers line up of Iron Man, Vision, Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Beast, The Wasp...and the Falcon! Which makes everyone frustrated, especially the Falcon, because Gyrich states that one of the government policies he must enforce is "equal opportunity for minorities." Can you believe it, Marvel always did and continues to bring moral and political issues to their books to make readers think.

- The Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are "kidnapped" by their father!?

- Two action packed issues where The Avengers fight the Absorbing Man.

- And of course the Origin of the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver finally revealed, the meat and potatoes of this book!

The writing is so true to the characters and the story moves along at a great pace. The art is John Byrne so of course it's good!

Need I say more!? Buy this book! Add it to your collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Avengers, July 29, 2010

This review is from: Avengers: Nights of Wundagore (Paperback)
I've been reading Avengers off and on for 40 some years. This collection marks a classic high point in the series. It's up there with the Neal Adams Skrull/Kree War and the introduction of the Vision. If you're an Avengers fan and haven't read this book, you can't go wrong here. Great art, fantastic story and great line up of heroes.

5.0 out of 5 stars last of the canon?, February 23, 2011

Closing out the glory years, on the heels of the sensational Perez run and Korvac saga, Byrne keeps the masterpieces coming with this set of classic issues. Does comic art get better than this? Byrne was spinning this same genius in the X-men of the same time period (arguably their greatest run, as well), and as in that book, the writing here is on equal par. An origin story that lives up to its unfolding mystery, in the land of gypsies, enchanted wood, dark magic, and a bovine nanny.

Great, great stuff. The as yet near-unbroken greatness of the Avengers title wasn't to last beyond this run, IMO.

Quicksilver's finest hour.

4.0 out of 5 stars Avengers at their best, December 30, 2011

This review is from: Avengers: Nights of Wundagore (Paperback)
This collection of Avengers stories is from a period I specially like. This Tpb, covers issues 181-187. The Covers are done by George Pérez mostly and some By John Byrne, The Interior Artwork is provided by John Byrne, while the Plot was done by David Michelinie.

The Story starts with the obligation imposed by the US government, represented by the infamous agent Henry Peter Gyrych for the Avengers to reduce their line-up to seven members, hand picked by the government. This creates tension, and was done to cut down the giant team before it , almost 30 active members. The main story is about the Scarlet Witch and Quick Silver tracking down their real origins , to Bulgaria, there is a fight with the Absorbing Man, and finally the demon Chton, among others.

This collection is very good, beautifuly ilustrated, and has good writng, not great, that is why I put only four stars on this one.

I bought this because even after many years later I remember the story so well. The comics they make now are crap compare to these. I read it, and now I 'm passing it on to my nephew who is very much into comics now.
