4.0 out of 5 stars A "Pretty Good" Avengers Story. June 28, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Avengers: Under Siege is an interesting arc. The first two issues are not what I expected... they have little to do with the main story, but it was almost like getting settled in for the good stuff. It revolves around Namor and people arguing if he should join the Avengers or not, but we get to see the problems between Wasp and Hercules which will lead into some important stuff later in the story. Issue 3, is when the ball gets rolling. It was a breath of fresh-air to see a villian who actually gets fully prepared. They easily take down the Avengers and and the mansion, but this wasn't the strongest Avengers team ever assembled. The villian though that shines throughout out this IMO was Mr. Hyde. He was angry and he did some serious stuff, without him the team would've been a lot weaker in terms of evil. There's quite a few of Avengers that really suffer in this, and the Masters of Evil almost seem like they could actually take down anyone with their numbers. But by the end, luckily some of the power-houses show up, Thor and Captain Marvel try and take back what is rightfully theirs. The last page is pretty emotional and has some very powerful panels. I'd say though by the end of the day, it would've been more impressive if the Masters of Evil took down a very powerful Avengers team, and the first two issues have almost nothing to do with the story that this book is trying to tell. The artwork is okay, but I've seen much better from this time period. The villians get sooo close to winning in this, which was awesome, but just couldn't pull it off. I would recommend this, but I prefer the Korvac Saga which is lengthier and feels like a much bigger story with many of the Avengers being present and a few more slug-fests than this.

Say what you will about the Masters of Evil but you sure can't accuse them of not trying to live up to thier name.

In what is easily the high point of Roger Stern's terrific six-year run as "Avengers" writer, the Masters launch their grandest plan ever. The setup is simple: Seeking revenge for the death of his father at Captain America's hands, Baron Helmut Zemo forms the largest and most powerful version ever of the Masters of Evil. At one point or another his band includes Moonstone, Blackout, Grey Gargoyle, Yellowjacket II, Screaming Mimi, Whirlwind, Goliath, Tiger Shark, the Absorbing Man, Titania, the Fixer, Mister Hyde and the Wrecking Crew.

That's a whole lot of evil.

The Masters launch a well-thought out cordinated assault that takes over Avengers Mansion, captures Cap and the Black Knight and beats Hercules to within an inch of his life. With the chips down, the Wasp must organize a counter-attack of Avengers to fight back. The action is terrific but the drama is at its height, no more so than when innocent butler Jarvis suffers horribly at the hands of the Masters. Zemo is shown as a man obsessed with vengence but smart enough to not let his ego get in the way as he commands the pack of bad guys. Captain America is also shown at his best, refusing to give in but endures a stunning private loss late in the story. And seeing Earth's Mightest brought low makes thier comeback all the better.

This new hardback version loses the fun painted cover of the 1998 paperback. But it does contain an additional issue in which the Avengers aid Namor in a civil war in Atlantis, explaining why the man had to be absent from the battle. The artwork is crisp and clear in that great '80's style and enhances the action sequences. Overall, if you haven't picked it up before, get this now to enjoy one of the truly Mightest moments in the history of Marvel's greatest heroes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Down to the wire... March 11, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Black Knight is knocked around like a two-bit has been. Wasp and Ant Man prove their mettle against the Absorbing Man and Titania. Jarvis becomes collateral damage while Zemo cuts through the heart of Captain America. Captain Marvel meets her match with Black Bolt, while Dr. Druid enters just in time to help save the day. This one has it all as it appears Hercules meets his end at the hands of the Wrecking Crew, Hyde and Goliath.
