4.0 out of 5 stars Good product with medium durability
This product is a good value for the money. It worked exactly as intended for about 1.5 years while riding about 30 miles every weekend. Then, the "teeth" holding the stem in place started to wear out flat and the steering bar started to jiggle. Tightening the stem helped for a while, but eventually it became so worn out that the tightening did not help any more and now...

4.0 out of 5 stars Works - exactly as advertised, October 1, 2010

This is a nice stem, and installed without any hassle. Adjustments are good, and the part looks great on my bike. It is a handlebar stem, what more can you say?

The grip only takes 25.4mm handlebar.
Mine did not fit, so I will be returning it.

I have an antique mountain bike... I bought a used Nishiki Ariel in 1986 when I was in college and lived 12 miles from Cal Poly... I was so broke I couldn't really afford to drive to school every day, so I bought a bike... I'm 6'4", and the one thing that has bugged me for years is how uncomfortable it is to ride for too long, because the bars were uncomfortably low... Mainly I used to just ride it on my lunch hours for a little exercise, but now I have to ride it every day from the train station to work, and it's really started to bug me.

I bought my wife a new bike last year, and it has an adjustable quill like this one... I was amazed at how much difference it made to be able to dial in the handle bar height you want... I immediately thought I should get one for my bike, but then it kind of slipped my mind... I'm 51, and fully in the throes of C.R.S.S. (Can't Remember Sh_t Syndrome)

When I started having to ride over 10 miles every day in bad weather with a laptop backpack, it became obvious that the time was now to replace my quill.

This one is very reasonably priced, and I am very happy with it. Good design, well made, looks good... I am a mechanical design engineer, so I always look at things with a critical eye as to how they are made... This quill is quite good from my viewpoint. (I don't care about weight, so that's not a factor... But functionally, it is very good... I like the fact that you just drop the handle bar into it and bolt the clamp down; the quill I took off the Nishiki was old school, where I had to remove the shifter and brake and the grip to get the bar out... I had replaced the grips about 10 years ago, and it was a struggle to get the thing off, but I managed finally...) The quill is very sturdy and secure, and very easy to adjust!

My bike is now completely comfortable for me to ride... What a difference a few inches make! Woo hoo!

My only regret as far as this puchase goes; I should have done this years ago... :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the best stem ever!, September 7, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Although it's not the best stem you'll ever own, if you're looking for an adjustable stem that will fit an old school 1-inch fork, this does the job as well as any high end brand at a fraction of the cost. I used it to convert my vintage racing bike into a hybrid by installing riser type mountain bike bars with thumb shifters and upgrading to 27 speeds. The adjustable stem took the guesswork out of getting the right angle plus it adjusts high for daily commuting and low for long distance weekend rides. It installed easily and I like having the clamp-on bars instead of having to run the bars through the older type stems. Now I enjoy riding the old vintage bike again and it smokes every hybrid I've come across with ease.

I put the 1 inch 110 cm on my road bike. I believe this is the standard size for any road bike built before the newer threadless headset design. My bike was from early 90s and it fit fine. After installing, my bike has never looked dorkier. My daughter saw me test driving it and busted out laughing. It really looks odd. But I'm turning 50 next week and I don't give a damn. Now I think I might ride my bike a lot more. Less neck pain, less back pain. Those few inches make a big difference. But it still feels like a road bike and not a comfort bike so if I ever do get into going for the long hauls I think it will work out fine. One thing, now my downtube shifters seem further away than ever. Oh well, maybe that will be the next upgrade. The quill does the job at a good price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Would have given it 5 stars, but it appears to have been used or returned before, May 24, 2011

The Avenir Adjustable Quill Stem I received is what I needed to complete my bike build and the product is what I ordered-the item itself is fine, it fits a 25.4mm handlebar, is a 1" stem and functions properly. I am only disappointed in that the item appears to be in a slightly "used" condition or maybe it was a returned item which was not disclosed to me in the item description. I don't mind buying used or returned items of this type, but only when I am made aware of this. The 6mm adjustable bolt appears to have been adjusted, the Avenir identification tag wasn't attached to the stem and was floating loosely inside an open plastic bag with the stem itself, and the stem appears to have cosmetic dirt, grease and fine scratches on it suggesting it may have been mounted or used in same way. Since I do not want to wait for a return, and the product is what I need, I am not returning it, but be aware that the item may not be all shiny and new looking when received. This item does make it much easier to turn my road bike into a more upright bicycle for commuting, and I like that I can adjust the angle to my comfort level.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great solution, May 4, 2011

This review is from: Avenir Adjustable Angle Quill 1 Inch Stem (Sports)
My handlebars were too low and too far forward. After riding for a short time, the pressure of the grips would make my fingers numb, even when wearing gel-padded gloves. This longer, adjustable quill solved both problems nicely. Further, it is very well constructed, and will probably outlast me. The method used for securing the handlebar is great--no trying to slide a larger bar through a small hole, or scratching it up in the process. There is literally nothing on this quill I would improve.
