(I have purchased both the front and rear wheel of this set, and the reviews are identical) These are some heavy wheels, right around 3lbs, but they are sturdy and should withstand some potholes. The hubs are initially tight but smooth out after a week of riding. My largest complaint is about the rims. First, they are not beaded, so make sure your tires are not too loose (in diameter). Second, where the rims are welded into a circle, the outside of the wall has a very noticeable dip. This becomes apparent when you apply your brakes: thump, thump, thump. Third, there are about 20 small holes on the inside of the rim, about the diameter of a spoke hole. These holes have sharp edges and are begging to pierce your inner-tube. They sit too high on the walls for a standard rim strip to cover. If you want to cover them, you'd have to buy a lot of rim tape and do up the whole inside of the rim.

Concerning the 2nd point, I actually returned the front wheel thinking it was a lemon, but the replacement wheel was almost identical in the dip at weld location. The same is true of the rear wheel.

The good: price... but wait....

The bad: the wheel is not ready to roll without servicing and extras that make it cost as much as it would at a local bike shop for a wheel with a skewer. Avenir was too cheap to include rim tape as is customary, the hub needs servicing because the bearings grind and some truing before your can use it. I was able to handle this because I have the tools and knowhow but it will likely cost anyone else about $15 extra + another couple bucks for rim tape. Just go to your local bike shop

While I was a little disconcerted to receive the box with one side caved in and the axles poking through the box on both sides, I opened up the box and found the wheel to be in perfect shape.
After reading a previous poster's notes on the sharp holes on the inside of the rim, I checked those out and although it did not seem like they would present a problem, I took a Dremel and smoothed the holes.
No problems installing the tube/mounting the tire/inflating.
Wheel performs as it should. Decent wheel at a decent price.

Purchased this item to replace a broken wheel on a late 1960s Ten Speed. Works perfectly with the antique cassette and brakes, and it came balanced from the factory.

Your average bike wheel. Not for the pros, but it works well for my needs. Pretty sturdy, and not too heavy. No cassette or anything included, just the wheel.

Please let me just say how much I hate this product. I read all the other reviews and i agree with them all but I also have some to add for myself and hopefully you wont buy this. I would rather buy a $50 nice alloy wheel that is straight than buy this piece of heavy worthless metal. I was so mad after putting it on and it being bent I stood on it and %&*%*& it up some more!

this wheel arrived with carton punctured on both sides by the axel which protruded from box. the wheel has been bent since i installed it and have a return authorization from Amazon but have not found a replacement yet, so it is still on the bike. i bought it for strength but it is a flimsy wheel. bends easily. junk. very disappointing.Avenir 36H Steel 27 Inch x 1-1/4 Inch 5-7spd Freewheel Silver Wheel (Rear)
