3.0 out of 5 stars Not for moms who work full-time
I registered for and received this pump after reading many of the reviews here. It is a perfectly good pump, but not the best for moms who work full-time. I used it while on maternity leave to express a couple ounces so my husband and I could go out once in a while and it worked fine, although I found it very slow. It took me ten to fifteen minutes to let down using...

When I had my first child, I knew that I wanted to breastfeed exclusively even though I had to return to work after six weeks. The Avent Isis breast pump made it possible for me to pump and store enough milk for my son while I was at work. I tried a Medela electric pump, since that was the one the nurses all suggested, but felt that it was slow and noisy. The Avent pump is manual so it makes no noise, but it is also much faster than any other pump I tried. When you first start to pump, it feels like there is not enough pressure, but as the suction builds there is more than enough, and you can control it by how far you squeeze the handle. Then just hold it down for several seconds while the milk keeps coming. You can do it with one hand. I'll be using mine again with the baby I'm expecting now.

I received this breast pump as a gift, and thought that I would never use it. It looked complicated, and I already had a small battery operated one, which I thought was great. That is, until I decided to try the Avent one. I didn't realize how uncomfortable the other one was until I tried the Avent pump. I ran out and bought another one, so that I could do both sides at once (I found that once one breast let down with the pump, the other would start to leak, so I pumped both sides at the same time. It took less time, and I didn't ruin all of my clean shirts!). I also found that the easiest way to clean all of the pieces is to get a small mesh lingerie laundry bag from the dollar store, and put all of the pieces in it. It's mesh, so everything comes clean, but it keep the smaller parts from getting lost in the dishwasher. Plus, all the pieces are together when you go to put it together the next time. I can grab the bag out of the dishwasher and assemble it while sitting on the couch, instead of dropping half the parts on the kitchen floor and having to sterilize them again. I used this pump with the Gerber storage bags. They fit onto the Avent bottles, and have a ziploc top to make it easier to throw them in the fridge or freezer. Then when you're ready to use the bags, just fold them over the top of the bottle like a regular liner.

5.0 out of 5 stars By far the best breast pump I've found..., December 5, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Avent ISIS Breast Pump with Disposable Nurser (Baby Product)
As a mother of 4(3 of which have been breast fed)I have used quite a few different breast pumps. With my second and third children I used the Manual Ease Breast Pump by Medela,it was painful, not so easy to use,and didn't produce very much milk for the effort. So needless to say I didn't use it very much.I then recieved the Adjustable Speed Breast Pump Kit by Evenflo as a baby shower gift for my fourth child.Because of my past problems with breast pumps,I was not looking forward to,but hopeful that this time might be different. This pump turned out to also be somewhat painful but better than the last. After about 20 min. of use,it still did not produce very much milk. Not to mention the clean up with this one was enough to keep me from ever wanting to pump again.I was just about to give up on breast pumps all together when I saw an ad,and then read some reviews on the AVENT ISIS,so I thought I'd give it one last shot. After getting this pump home,it seemed to good to be true. The instructions were so easy.I used it,and the very first time I did I pumped not even 10 min. and had a 6oz. bottle for my baby. The "let down cushion" really lives up to it's name.It helps produce more milk quicker and more naturally than any other pump I've used.Traveling with this pump is also easy,it's very compact and strong(it has been droped many, let me stress many, times). The clean up of this pump is very easy, with only 6 parts to break down to clean(with most you have hoses and other small parts)this is by far the very best pump I have found...I just wish I would have found it 3 children ago.It has allowed my husband to feed and bond with our baby, and allowed me the peace of mind to know,if I should need to provide a bottle for our child,I can do it easily and comfortably.I recomend this pump to everyone. If you're like I was and about to give up on the whole "breast pump" thing...give this one a try, you WILL NOT be sorry you did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great little pump!, September 5, 2001
This review is from: Avent ISIS Breast Pump with Disposable Nurser (Baby Product)
Recently, while on vacation I misplaced the membranes for my Medela Pump In Style Breastpump, which are vital for operation. The spare parts were safe at home, and with a hungry boy on my hands I was in a predicament. Unable to nurse, I have provided my son with breastmilk by pumping three times a day since birth. I was concerned about maintaining my milk supply, not to mention the discomfort of very full breasts, so I purchased the Isis Breastpump because I use Avent products and like the idea of being able to pump right into the feeding bottle, 4 oz, 9 oz or disposable. I am amazed by the comfort, control and power this little hand pump provides. In addition, I enjoy the convenience of not having to be "plugged in" and the reduced amount of bottles to wash. I found this pump to be great in a pinch, or for a weekend away. However, for my particular situation having to express 30 ounces a day in order to keep up with my little guy, the Pump In Style is superior to the Isis both in speed and quantity of milk expressed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Breast Pump, August 20, 2001
This review is from: Avent ISIS Breast Pump with Disposable Nurser (Baby Product)
I didn't think that this pump would work for me. I have very large breasts and when I received this pump I just looked at it and said "this isn't going to do a thing" While in the hospital I rented the Medela electric pump which I have used before. It worked ok. One night I decide to try the Avent pump and I was amazed!! I expressed 5 oz. of milk in 10 minuted. Unlike the other pump where I got 5 oz. in 20 minutes. I would highly recommend this pump to anyone who wants to breastfeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Medela!, August 31, 2001
By
This review is from: Avent ISIS Breast Pump with Disposable Nurser (Baby Product)
Whether you go with disposable bottles or reusable, or use a both as I do, this is just the greatest pump! I never expected a manual pump to work more quickly than my Medela mini electric, but it does, and since I'm not plugged in anywhere, I can pump anywhere--as a stay at home mom, that pretty much means in any room, but if you need to pump at work, this is lightweight, and most important, I'm sure, silent! It can be done with one hand, and although at other sites others have claimed to pump with one hand while nursing at the other breast, I'm not quite that coordinated! I'm sorry to hear someone had a problem with durability. My daughter, now 2, nursed for a year, during which time this pump saw lots of use, and my son, 6 months, has just started solids, but I've used the pump for preparing milk for dad to feed him, and also when he was first born and had nursing problems, to relieve engorgement and to bottle feed. Now I'm pumping to have milk to mix with his cereal. Point is, I've found this pump to be VERY durable. The other person whose pump cracked must have had the bad one of the lot. I can most confidently recommend this pump, and anything else Avent puts out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Great For Not Too Much $$$, February 2, 2002
This review is from: Avent ISIS Breast Pump with Disposable Nurser (Baby Product)
I bought this pump while I was pregnant after reading women's rave reviews on my favorite pregnancy forum. My son ended up staying in the hospital for a week after he was born and I had to pump every three hours. The hospital let me borrow their very expensive electic double pump Medela model. While it worked fine, I found that I could get just as much milk in the same amount of time from my trusty little Avent pump. I loved that it didn't cost an arm and and leg, but was still very good quality. When my husband and I were away from the baby for long periods of time, I could bring my pump along (it even fit in my purse). Very convenient. My only complaint is that it has lots of weird little pieces and is kind of hard to clean/put back together. I had to consult the directions the first 15 times I put it back together. But it gets easier. I would highly recommend this breast pump.

5.0 out of 5 stars better than a Medela electric, January 30, 2002

I have to say I was somewhat skeptical when this pump was recommended to me by a Babies R Us sales associate. I had always heard about how great the Medela Electric pumps were, so of course that is what I got. I ended up going back and getting this Isis pump, and it is SO much better than any other pump. Let down occurs easily with this pump, and there is no noise, no discomfort. Assembly and cleaning are easy. I like how you can hold the handle down for a few seconds and milk continues to be expressed. You would think your hand would get tired, but this is so easy to use that at 1 month post partum I was pumping 8oz in about 10 minutes. This was amazing to me after getting such poor results after using an electric pump. Hi-tech is obviously not the way to go with breast pumps.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only pump I'll ever use, May 29, 2002

This review is from: Avent ISIS Breast Pump with Disposable Nurser (Baby Product)
With my 1st baby, I rented a Medela hospital grade electric pump. I did the job pretty well, but the suction was weak and sluggish. With baby #2, I purchased the EvenFlo electric pump..I advise you to avoid that one like the plague (lacation consultants are unanimous that the EvenFlo pump pulls too hard on the breast tissue). Not to mention the fact that if you're a working/nursing Mom, you'd better have a private place to pump that doesn't require the use of an outlet!

I just purchased the Avent Isis pump on the advice of my hospital's lactation consultant. What a joy! No outlet required, silent, and easy to assemble and operate. Breast pump includes rubber insert that cups the breast to stimulate the let-down reflex quicker (literally within seconds- I was amazed how fast it happened); also includes travel cover, disposable nurser, 20 pre-sterilzed liners, 10 sealing clips, 40 date labels, 3 extra liner holders, sterile nipple travel pack (with Newborn nipple for disposable nurser)spare parts and instruction pamphlets. If you'd rather not spend money on the disposable liners, the Avent bottles can also be used with this pump in leiu of the disposable nurser, if need be. All in all, I am one satisfied customer. Avent makes great products and I've never been disappointed.

Mom to 2 boys (Atlanta, GA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Avent ISIS Breast Pump with Disposable Nurser (Baby Product)
This pump is great! I bought it after my unsuccessful use of an electric pump, I couldn't believe the difference. The electric pump that I used was a little painful (even on the lowest setting) and it took what seemed like forever to express a small amount of milk. The ISIS, on the other hand, was very gentle and I was able to express a lot more milk in a short amount of time. I use the Avent disposable bottles, so it is very convenient to pump directly into the bottle bags and store them in the refrigerator/freezer. This pump is also very easy to take apart and clean.
