These are great sippies. I understand the complaints about the many parts, but I haven't found this to be a problem at all. Just put the cup back together when you take it out of the dishwasher B4 you put it away, so you don't lose parts.

I bought the 6m+ version of these sippy cups as my daughter has used Avent bottles with great success. My major problem with these cups is that they are so incredibly hard to get any liquid through that my daughter couldn't drink from them!

We tried several times over the course of a couple months (she was 6 months when we started them) with no success. When I tried the cup to see if she was just giving up on it because it was new, *I* had a hard time getting the liquid out!

So, while I think the rest of the cup is designed well, the handles are easy to grab, the bright colors catch her eye, I through the sippy lid to the back of the drawer. We now use the colored cup part more as an indicator that it does not contain milk, and have started using a Playtex sippy with great success.

It's definitely spill proof, but unless your kid is a master of sucking, this very well could be sip-proof as well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nothing magical about these cups, November 19, 2008
This review is from: Avent Magic Trainer Cup Twin Pack, 7 Ounce, Colors May Vary (Baby Product)
These cups leak like crazy! I took pictures of them leaking. I will be uploading them into amazon's product picture page, we'll see if it's approved. There is a hole at the base of the nozzle, right where it meets the colored plastic. I don't know why the hole is there, but all of the cups have this design flaw. Don't waste your money on these cups. They are cute, but they leak and make a terrible mess. I've tried gerber cups and those were a lot better.

1.0 out of 5 stars Leaks, and hard to sip from, August 24, 2008

I found that more liquid came out of the sides and the vent hole than came out of the sipping mechanism. My son would suck on it, but the mechanism was so tight that the liquid would turn foamy. Bad for the tummy, frustrating, and makes a big mess.

These are great sippies. I understand the complaints about the many parts, but I haven't found this to be a problem at all. Just put the cup back together when you take it out of the dishwasher B4 you put it away, so you don't lose parts.

I also like that the handles are detachable, because -
1.)You can twist the handle after you tighten the lid so that the handles match up with how your child needs to hold them to get the spout into their mouth. - Rather than with other sippy cups, where you have to work hard to get the handles lined up with the spout so your child isn't having to hold the cup all crooked to get the spout in their mouths straight.
2.)You can remove the handles all together as your child gets older and you want to train them to hold a regular cup. It's part of the "stages of growth" design.

The spout is soft and comfortable, and easy for baby to work (works with suction, not bite pressure). My breast-fed baby figured it out very easily, the first day we gave it to her.

They absolutely DO NOT spill! Baby can shake it all she wants - no worries. HOWEVER - the spout will leak if the spout gets squeezed or bent, BUT ONLY A SMALL AMOUNT (whatever liquid is already stuck in the tip of the spout will leak out, and that's it. Maybe 1/4 tsp.?-- even when upside down, once that tiny bit comes out, it will stop leaking). When I travel with one, I just squeeze the liquid out B4 I throw it into the diaper bag (I don't even use the lid), and it never leaks!

As someone mentioned, the hole above the spout (used to enable liquid to flow freely) does leak sometimes. I notice that if I overfill the cup, it leaks while she's drinking and can even squirt on baby's nose. Kind of uncomfortable. But if I don't overfill it, it only leaks occaisionally, and the spout is designed so that the liquid that does leak, runs onto the spout and into her mouth without getting on her nose.

Best sippy we've EVER used with our 4 children!

3.0 out of 5 stars Mixed review, August 21, 2011

I bought these cups around the time that our twins were 8 months old. They easily learned to hold the sippy cup, tip it up, etc. using these cups. We had transitioned from Avent bottles to these Avent Magic Trainer cups. However, they refused the cups initially because the spout is much too hard and so the twins held firm to wanting their Avent bottle nipple. Fortunately, I discovered that the Avent bottle nipple does fit in the Avent sippy cup so we took out the spouts and put in the bottle nipple. They were 8 months still and we figured that they could just at least learn to use the cup and we'll figure out how we're going to transition them off the bottle nipple between 1-1.5 years, as recommended by our pediatrician and plenty of other sites/organizations.

Fast forward to their current age of 1 year and wow did they resist switching from their bottle nipple. They love the Avent cup but refused to part with the Avent bottle nipple. We tried other spout cups. Fail. We tried straw cups. Fail. Finally, I realized that the problem is that far too many of the spouts, straws, etc. are simply way too hard and they are used to a soft silicone bottle nipple so why shouldn't the spout also be similarly soft, at least in the beginning when they also have to get used to the shape of a spout instead of the nipple?

I was very excited when I found the Nuk Learner Cup which does have a soft, silicone spout. Incidentally, I noticed online that parents who have very particular babies who are resistant to the sippy cup transition seem to end up going with Nuk or going with a cold turkey method of transition. I excitedly brought home the Nuk Learner cups only to be met with more crying, throwing of cups, refusal to drink, etc.

On a whim, I tried to put the Nuk Learner cup soft spout in the Avent sippy cup and that, it turns out, was the perfect combination for our babies. I also noticed that this combination leaks a lot less than the Avent bottle nipple in the Avent sippy cup and Avent bottles. That was a win. The only downside is if it drops on a hard surface like our ceramic tile floor, it can spill. We've had 2 spills though in just under a month so that's really acceptable to me. With the Nuk soft spout in the Avent sippy cup, we've had almost no leaks or babies with wet shirts like we had with the Avent bottle nipple. At some point later, maybe we'll try the Avent spout but it's much too hard with babies like ours that apparently need a soft transition.

I'm giving this a 3 star review because I think the shape of the sippy cup itself was great for teaching our babies the logistics of using a sippy cup at 8 months old. But the Avent spout that comes with this is much too hard for our babies and there ought to be a softer alternative, like what Nuk offers. On the flipside, our babies definitely prefer the shape of the Avent sippy cup over the Nuk sippy cup and so the combo that worked for us was the Avent sippy cup with the Nuk spout. They are now transitioned to sippy cups and off of bottles at 1 year old.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute *BEST* No-Spill Baby/Toddler Cups, October 6, 2007

These were the best sippy cups I could find in terms of being leak-free when my oldest, who's now 5 years, was a baby.

Now he's all grown but we've added a little brother to the family. Our youngest is now 10 months old and so we purchased these sippy cups for him. Five years later, the Avent still passes the test.

They are easy to clean, easy for baby to manage with the big spout and positionable handles. But more of all, they are completely, utterly, 100% leak free. Upside down, sideways, tossed across the room, we never lose a drop. And that's important to me.

These are now my "official" sippy cups and i won't use any other kind. Even with age they continue to have an waterproof seal, which I've never found with other brands. The inevitable let go over time. Not so with Avent.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works well - but don't lose the plastic seal!!!, July 29, 2011
This review is from: Avent Magic Trainer Cup Twin Pack, 7 Ounce, Colors May Vary (Baby Product)
My son (8 months old) picked this cup over all the others I had and it was the only one that didn't leak if I let him have it in the car seat or playpen. BUT, that said, there is a little plastic cap that goes on the bottom of the spout and if you lose it the cup is then useless. I'm not sure if this is the reason that this cup leaked for others but I managed to lose two in the dishwasher and when I tried to go without it the cup leaked all over thanks to that little hole in the spout area. As for not getting anything out I have no answers - it's worked fine for us as long as I have all the parts put together right.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good starter sippy, April 27, 2010

I'm surprised by so many negative reviews! My 8 mo. old has been using this at meal time for two months and it seems like the perfect thing to transition from bottle to sippy. He has no problem getting liquid out and we haven't had any leak issues. I don't think he would do nearly as well with a cup that didn't have these great handles. I'm giving it four starts instead of five because washing all the parts gets tedious and the spout really holds on to liquid (because of the leak-proof rubber piece) so I can't ever seem to get it perfectly clean and dry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great cup, not sure about the valve, March 6, 2007
This review is from: Avent Magic Trainer Cup Twin Pack, 7 Ounce, Colors May Vary (Baby Product)
I really like that I can pump straight into this cup with the Avent converter kit. It saves me loads of time and hassle with extra bottles, transferring breastmilk and putting together the feeds. I'm not sure about the valve. DD got very frustrated and we've just taken them out, but then, she's never used the valves in any of her cups.

1.0 out of 5 stars Much better cups out there..., June 17, 2011

This review is from: Avent Magic Trainer Cup Twin Pack, 7 Ounce, Colors May Vary (Baby Product)
Pros: Easy for baby to hold. My daughter was able to easily grip the cup and put to her mouth.
Cons: Hard to suck out of. My daughter never could get liquid out. I even tried to drink out of them and it was hard for me.
When she would shake liquid would come out.

Overall I would not recommend these cups. I prefer the Nuby brand. Much easier to drink out of. My daughter has done much better with Nuby cups. These are just too hard to get liquid out of.
