5.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive add-on for 4 extra analog channels
This expansion allows you to add 4 extra analog channels to your NV5000 card. When you install it and restart the NV5000 software (you don't need to reboot), it detects the expansion card and allows you to set up channels 5-8. Note that the extra channels only support analog cams, not IP cams - you can run 4 analog or IP cams on channels 1-4, and 4 analog cams on...

This must be a nice little profit generator for the company. It is nothing more than 4 BNC connectors connected to a ribbon cable. No active electronics whatsoever. Probably cost less than a dollar to make. But if you want the extra channels for your card, you don't have much of a choice except to buy this. Yeah, it works....but what a ripoff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive add-on for 4 extra analog channels, February 9, 2012
This review is from: AverMedia NVD4VIEXT 4-Channel Video Extension Card (Electronics)
This expansion allows you to add 4 extra analog channels to your NV5000 card. When you install it and restart the NV5000 software (you don't need to reboot), it detects the expansion card and allows you to set up channels 5-8. Note that the extra channels only support analog cams, not IP cams - you can run 4 analog or IP cams on channels 1-4, and 4 analog cams on channels 5-8, for a total of 8 cams, 4 of which can be IP cams.

It also drops the maximum frame rate per channel, as the card still supports the same total frames per second, but now divides it between 8 channels instead of 4. If your PC is already struggling with 4 channels (especially if they're IP cams), you'll tax it further with this add-in, but that's the way it is with capture cards and older PCs.

If you want to test how your system will work with this installed, you can fake it into thinking the card is installed by adding a jumper to the NV5000 expansion connector at one end. This will enable the extra 4 channels, though you won't have any way to connect cameras to them unless you also make some 2 pin connector to BNC cables. Still, it will let you check the new settings and see how your maximum frame rate and display layouts are affected.

You do get more than just cables with BNC connectors for your money - you also get a PCB and slot mount that gives a secure connection. If you're good with making stuff, you can certainly make your own version easily enough, but whether the tradeoff of time vs the money saved is worth it is a personal call.
