A Funk-Filled Time Capsule,

This review is from: Average White Band - Live at Montreux, 1977 (DVD)
Having had the opportunity to see AWB in person several times in the late 70s and early 80s, I was thrilled to find out that there is FINALLY a DVD capturing the band's live performance at the peak of their trade. This is an incredible DVD capturing an energetic and FUN-KY performance. The video quality is dated -- looking almost like it was filmed by a personal video camera. But what it lacks in video quality is made up in the excellent DTS remixing of the audio. AWB has not sounded better live since they performed live.
Compared to other DVDs with the later incarnations of the band, this DVDs is heads & shoulders above. If you are an AWB fan, this is a MUST OWN. If you're too young to remember anything about AWB (except maybe Pick Up The Pieces) this concert will show you how it was done Old School style: real musicians, playing real music LIVE ... and dripping with soul. Enjoy!

Taped at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1977 this concert video shows its age in picture quality but delivers some good audio quality. This minor quibble aside lets get to the core of the DVD - the concert itself. AWB were on top of their game at 1977 and this concert footage shows a tight, funky and constantly grooving band bringing the crowd to their feet and dancing. Anchored by the heavy funk drumming by Steve Ferrone supported by percussionist Sammy Figueroa the energy keeps on flowing. The show is boldly opened with the classic hit "Pick Up The Pieces" and delivers hit after hit like "Cut The Cake", "Person To Person", "Work To Do" - wish I was there myself! I am glad that such great concerts become available now and look forward to more great music videos from the Montreux Jazz Festival series. Don't miss this one!

How can they leave out their greatest and funkiest song School Boy Crush? I was really disappointed this song wasn't included. Nonetheless this DVD captures AWB in their prime

Great retro dvd,
This review is from: Average White Band - Live at Montreux, 1977 (DVD)
I think fans (and not) should remember that this DVD is from 1977 and not current and therefore the video quality will not be as more modern dvd's. The audio is fine and the actual content is extraodinary. The performance is nothing short of outstanding. Anyone looking for a representative performance of this band should be pleased.

The AWB is an amazing group of musicians, who play kick-a$$ funky music, and the amazing thing is that they're all white boys from Scotland!! Somehow these guys have managed not only to play R&B as though they grew up in Memphis, but they GET IT!! This album rocks...

Waited 3 years to purchase this. Shouldn't have. I'm a true funk-a-holic and this is the most professionally produced, professional band of the day. The music is flawless, but obviously wasted on the audience. Thank God for video tape and DVD. To see one of the funkiest bands of all time at their peak, in their prime and with high quality video and audio is truly a treasure. I hope people enjoy it as much as I did.

If you enjoy collecting DVD concerts, this is a foundation work. AWB might have invented blue eye soul. The best question would be. Who followed AWB and did it better. How about no one.

Here we go! This dvd was a great experience for me. Not just as a musician, but as a person who loves music. The pros if you will! ORIGINAL INSTRUMENTS, AND BAND MEMBERS make this dvd special. The engineers remixxed the sound very well, bringing out every note you knew wasn't on the original. You can see how the band jelled together, making tight clean music. I was impressed with all of the tracks and camera shots. NOW THE CONS! The bonus features sounded great, but really only had a mono camera shot wich left you wandering am I watching a looped production of the same statues, or am I watching a concert. Come on, TLC, one of the funkiest grooves ever recorded by any group, (white or black), saved the dvd bonus features. My wife and I loved watching this dvd. I recommend you watch it only on a large flat screen with surround to get the full effect. This dvd is not for the young cats, they would not understand it, this is truley for the over 45 crowd easy. Play it at a party and it will rock, I garuuuuunteee it.
