5.0 out of 5 stars experienced user - best computer I've ever owned
Unbelievably great little powerful machine. Best computer I've ever had (out of MACs and PCs) hands down. I have had this since December 2, 2003. Not one problem. Works like a dream. Amazingly powerful. I am so glad I took a chance on Averatec. I know they all basically buy the parts from the same people, but I was very uneasy to purchase from someone new to the American...

1.0 out of 5 stars Avoid Averatec
I bought an Averatec 3150H notebook in January. The first one had defective battery and I returned it. The replacement had problems with screen, I sent it in for repairs and it's now been in their repair shop for over two months waiting for parts. Averatec product quality is inferior and their service is non-existent. Don't waste your money on this brand.

This review is from: Averatec 3150HD Laptop (AMD Athlon XP-M 1600+ with PowerNow, 256 MB RAM, 30GB Hard drive) (Personal Computers)
Unbelievably great little powerful machine. Best computer I've ever had (out of MACs and PCs) hands down. I have had this since December 2, 2003. Not one problem. Works like a dream. Amazingly powerful. I am so glad I took a chance on Averatec. I know they all basically buy the parts from the same people, but I was very uneasy to purchase from someone new to the American market and also unsure about the Athlon processor. I am so glad I did. Wi-fi works awsome! CD burner/DVD player is great. It's so lightweight. I can run multiple programs, while streaming or playing MP3s etc...without any sign of slow down. But I would definitely recommend the H series over the P series. I have heard there were problems with those earlier P models. Still using this 1 year later from original post in 2004 and just wanted to add to this that it still is great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth a look! Excellent Value!, March 22, 2004

If you are looking for good workstation performance, you need to give the Averatec 3150hd a chance!
The obvious attraction is the size and design of the notebook. At first glance it is sleek and very well laid out. Despite it's small size, the keys are quite large and have a nice feel.(not squishy like previous models) The touchpad is also large for such a small notebook. Although the price is excellent, a slightly better quality LCD would have been the icing on the cake. The LCD is nice, but better contrast would have been appreciated. AMD offers the best performance for price ratio with it's Athlon Mobile series and despite a slight increase in heat, the added speed is well worth it! I like the fact that Averatec actually considered USB devices and included 3 USB 2.0 ports. Yes, firewire would have been nice but for the price I am not complaining! I have to say that a real volume dial and an actual Wireless ON/OFF switch made me very happy! Using the Max Battery power management setting in windows xp gave me 2.5 Hours of pleasure, surfing and typing.

I can say that people who buy this machine for gaming need help. It is a workstaion. PERIOD. A nice workstation. Students and professionals will be pleased. I know i am.

4.0 out of 5 stars Laptop lacks power, but still decent., September 30, 2004

I bought this computer at a Staples in Bozeman, MT for $879, so I don't know what this $1200 is for. But anyways, the computer. One of the smallest laptops for sale at a reasonable cost for what you get. Averatec's customer service center is second to none. If you have a problem, call them and do what they tell you. If they tell you to send the computer, do it and they'll repair it for free.

The only downside to this computer that I found is that the processor runs at a very low speed, even when not idle or hibernating. The fastest I've ever seen the processor run has been in the 300 Mhz range, even when doing memory intensive applications. Not for the serious gamer in any respect.

The computer is solid. The case is sturdy, but it will scratch fairly easily. The keyboard will bend when pressed on in some areas, especially under the "QWER" and the "UIOP" sections. The modem, ethernet and VGA plugs are loocated on the side of the unit, which I found slighty annoying. I just wish Averatec would make a docking station/port replicator so it could function as a desktop. Plays movies well, has enough memory to do everything except play games.

I am a student, so I bought this computer so I could take notes in class and be able to do my work while I was in away from home. This computer has performed admirably in these respects. It is light, and it works, which my number one priority.

Not to be used as a desktop replacement. A Dell, HP, Compaq, or a Sony would better fit your needs.

This review is from: Averatec 3150HD Laptop (AMD Athlon XP-M 1600+ with PowerNow, 256 MB RAM, 30GB Hard drive) (Personal Computers)
This machine is incredible. It performs really well. Hands down a great buy. Have not had any problems and the machine works well, purchased it about 3 weeks ago. It was easy to configure my wireless, loaded all my app's and I was good to go. Overall a good little system. I see this brand showing up all over the place these days...If you are looking for a thin and light this is a great buy.

1.0 out of 5 stars Averatec = poor quality control, March 7, 2004
This review is from: Averatec 3150HD Laptop (AMD Athlon XP-M 1600+ with PowerNow, 256 MB RAM, 30GB Hard drive) (Personal Computers)
First one I got had a defective battery connector - battery wouldn't charge. Returned it. Second one I got had defective screen (backlighting flickered on and off) and bad hard disk (many bad sectors). Their quality control is a joke!

3.0 out of 5 stars short distance wifi, April 25, 2004

This review is from: Averatec 3150HD Laptop (AMD Athlon XP-M 1600+ with PowerNow, 256 MB RAM, 30GB Hard drive) (Personal Computers)
I liked the look and feel of this computer overall. What I did not like was that the range of the wifi(802.11b) was not long enough. I like to work in front of the TV which is on the first floor and my router is on the 2nd floor. I could not do this with the 3150HD. Am able to do this with 2 other laptops that I use. The range of the wifi on the 3150HD was less than 1/2 the distance other computers that I use.
I was unable to get any help from Averatec on this issue. I returned to buy.com and got a full refund.

I got this right here at Amazon auctions for $550.00 new, a great price. A great notebook. I think I'll upgrade the ram to 512 MB. Their tech support was excellent. I had to call twice with questions (nothing serious) and I got thru right away

This review is from: Averatec 3150HD Laptop (AMD Athlon XP-M 1600+ with PowerNow, 256 MB RAM, 30GB Hard drive) (Personal Computers)
This is a pretty cool notebook. I really like its size, and its weight is only 4.3 lbs. The display is really sharp, and the notebook looks more expensive than it costs. I am really pleased with its performance and was unsure of purchasing this off brand. I had seen this at several of the retailers. I really got a great deal for the specifications. I was considering a Sony however comparing a similar unit I got a better buy ($) from this Averatec. Overall this is a great product. I recommend!

2.0 out of 5 stars NEVER AGAIN, April 10, 2004

I bought several of 3150P.
exact 50% of them had defective speaker.
DVD drives on 100% of them do not read recorded
DVDs that ALL TOSHIBA and SONY laptops read NO SWEAT.
Keyboard virtually popped out in 1 of them despite hardly
any use. NEVER MORE will I buy a good looking shoddy quality laptop like this. I wish we had returned them all in
30 days instead of being enchanted with their GREAT LOOK and keeping them. The quality fo service is FAR from
that offered by HP. They will not even bother to pick up the stuff in Fremont where they in theory assemble them.
