Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Extremely thin (10.6 by 9.6 by 1.2 inches) and very lightweight (a mere 4.3 pounds), Averatec's 3150 series of mobile computers are some of the smallest standard notebooks on the market. Though not exactly a power user's dream rig, this model, the Averatec 3150HW, is a smart option for those who require excellent portability and a fiscally sensible price point.

Powered by a trio of cost-effective components -- a 1.4 GHz AMD Athlon XP-M 1600+ processor (with PowerNow and QuantiSpeed technologies for improved battery life and faster data movement than previous AMD processors), 512 MB DDR SDRAM memory (double that of the marginally less expensive Averatec 3150P), and an integrated S3 ProSavage8 graphics controller with 32 MB of shared video memory, the Averatec 3150HW delivers midlevel computing prowess. Users can expect solid performance for standard 2-D tasks such as word processing, spreadsheets, Internet surfing, contact management, and basic drawing. However, sophisticated business applications and complex multitasking will likely tax the system's capabilities. Furthermore, the unit's graphics engine will not effectively handle mid- to high-end 3-D gaming or animation.

The Averatec 3150HW features an adequate 30 GB hard disk on which to store your important data, and a DVD/CD-RW drive through which you can play and burn audio CDs, archive data and play DVD movies. DVD burning is not supported. You'll monitor your activities on a 12.1-inch XGA TFT display capable of sharp 1024 by 7678 resolutions, and listen to your tunes via built-in stereo speakers.

For such a small and affordable notebook, the Averatec 3150HW is very well connected. Communication options include integrated 10/100 Mbit LAN for fast networking and Internet access, a 56K modem for slower dial-up environments and 802.11b wireless for those times when you can't plug in. Other important amenities include three fast USB 2.0 ports for data streaming with external devices such as scanners and digital cameras, a Type II PC Card CardBus slot, and an 85-key full-sized keyboard. An IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for swapping data with digital camcorders) is not included.

Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition heads up the preinstalled software bundle, which also features Microsoft's Works 7.0 productivity package and a DVD playback utility. Battery life is estimated at a commendable 3-plus hours with the enclosed Smart Li-ion cell.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value for money!, April 10, 2004
This review is from: Averatec 3150HW Laptop (AMD Athlon XP-M 1600+ with PowerNow, 512 MB RAM, 30 GB Hard drive, DVD+CD-RW combo) (Personal Computers)
I wasn't familiar with the brandname, but took a chance after reading all the positive reviews on CNET. I bought this laptop because it was light (about two-thirds the size of most laptops) and affordable (almost half the price of laptops similar in size and functionality). Plus, on a frivolous note, it's sleek and stylish.

I should mention there are some drawbacks. The keyboard layout is a bit awkward; the space key is very short and the placement of the Ctrl, Fn and Del keys are not standard. The computer has a tendency to run hot and when the fan kicks it, it's quite noisy. There's no firewire port. The battery only lasts about 2.5 to 3 hours. (Incidentally, regardless of what kind of laptop you buy, it's important to look after the battery properly. Li-ion batteries will lose effectiveness if they are overcharged or left in full charge without use.)

Those are fairly minor complaints, though. Overall, I'm very pleased with this laptop. I've had it for a month now, and it's been a real joy to use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice for the price, July 27, 2004
This review is from: Averatec 3150HW Laptop (AMD Athlon XP-M 1600+ with PowerNow, 512 MB RAM, 30 GB Hard drive, DVD+CD-RW combo) (Personal Computers)
I love this little notebook. It does run hot, and the battery lasts about 2.5 hours, but the light weight and nice speed and wifi make up for everything.

Get yourself a Mareware case designed for the small Apple laptop. It is terrific and protective but very compact. It makes a package that you actually do not mind carrying around and traveling with. I have had dozens of inquiries about where to obtain the Averatec since most are carrying around laptops that are twice has heavy.

Had many features I wanted; however, wish it came with XP Professional and a little larger HD (40- 80 Gig). works well; runs a little hot.
