5.0 out of 5 stars Sexy laptop!
I shopped around for over a month before I finally decided to buy the Averatec 5110H notebook. The price was unbelievable: it's an outstanding value IMHO. Best of all it's a beautiful looking notebook. It's thin, it's light, it's packed with features - including 512 MB of RAM, DVD/CD-RW combo drive, and wireless. I'm thrilled with it.

I tried calling tech support...

We own 2 other labtops and a desktop. I needed an extra notebook at a resonable price to use primarily for my son's school projects and internet. My first impression with the Averatec out of the box is that it is not as sturdy as my IBM thinkpad or the Toshiba. I wanted to give it time and be objective. After a few weeks this opinion was even clearer. The computer is essentially put together cheaply so you get fooled by the lower price compared to peers. to be specific you will notice the following: The poor: The keyboard keys, out of the box are uneven , some are slanting , others are bulging, and get worse with use quickly, they make a noticable loud sound compared to all labtops I used. The speaker volume and quality is very poor. You will have to use the headphone if you plan to watch DVD's in flights. I am concerned about the long term reliability and quality of service from a new company in a competitive market. The OK : Have a resonable software package. Only the 5110P model has the DVD writer, 5110H has the Roxio DVD writer software that you can use with an external DVD writer. it is thin but slightly wider and longer than most other 15 inch notebooks. so it ended up over 6 Lb in weight. The silver color is flashy for kids, but when you examine it closely,it is irregular platic. The price is OK but only slightly less than other well known and quality proven notebooks with a similar package.
The good: the Pentium centrino 1.3 is fast, responsive and quiet, it is is comprable or even faster than P-4 at 1.8 GHZ on my IBM thinkpad for all my applications. The wireless card is easy to set up on my current network ( these pretty much the advantage ot the Centrino mobile system). My recommendation: For slightly more money you can do MUCH better. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.

3.0 out of 5 stars Graphics quality is poor, March 10, 2004

Bought this notebook because of its low price, was very impressed initially with its speed, good looks and thin dimensions.

But once I started working on it, the lack of a graphics card and possibly poor screen quality made for strenuous viewing. I was forced to return the machine I bought for this reason. Averatec must consider putting in a graphics card into this machine.. that will make it a good bet.

I tried calling tech support with a small question, and got a very articulate fellow who was very helpful.

It for me was a major purchase, and I am confident I got an outstanding deal. The Averatec 5110H is a pleasure to own and use.

The notebook is a great combo of power and features
BUT:
1. the speakers are awful
2. the keyboard is loud and cheap feeling
3. My Lcd display went bad after a month of use, which makes me wonder how long this notebook will last past its warranty period.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good deal, April 24, 2005

This review is from: Averatec 5110H Laptop (1.3 GHz Pentium-M (Centrino), 512 MB RAM, 40GB Hard Drive, DVD-ROM/CD-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
Very good price for the features. Corners were cut on the construction. After over a year, the pieces of plastic covering the display hinge fell off. The switch that turns the display off when the laptop is closed sunk in and doesnt get triggered anymore. The modem died. The hard disk sounds like a lawnmower sometimes. The casing is generally flimsy given the weight of the laptop relative to other more expensive laptops.

The actual funtionality of the laptop is great and its an amazing deal to anyone who will be gentle to their computer.

This is a very versatile notebook, either as a desktop replacement, or just for the mobile technology.

Lightweight, compact, easy to use, runs cool due to centrino processor.

Only potential downsides is the pitch of the keyboard, but I adapted to that quickly.

This is probaly the best affordable all around notebook out there! Never looked back since I bought this and the four hour battery was icing on the cake!
