Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Svelte and stylish at just 3.4 pounds, the Averatec AV1150-EW1 notebook PC offers ultimate portability and excellent computing power. It has a high-resolution AveraBrite widescreen 10.6-inch LCD that supports up to a 1280 x 768-pixel Hi-Def resolution. A built-in high-speed wireless LAN (802.11b/g) with dual-antenna allows for super fast Internet multimedia streaming and downloading. And you'll stay secure thanks to the included Norton AntiVirus and Intel's Execute Disable Bit functionality that can halt worm attacks and eliminate the need for software patches.

Designed for users requiring advanced mobility, this notebook is powered by the ultra-low voltage 1.1 GHz Intel Pentium M 733 processor, which helps extend battery life when away from the office (up to 5 hours). It also features a 80 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (2 GB max), a dual-layer DVD drive (which also enables you to burn your favorite music mixes to CD), 4-in-1 memory card reader, and Microsoft Windows XP Professional operating system.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 80 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) is the average size for notebook PCs (though larger than found in other notebooks of this size), providing enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and productivity software.
  • Processor: The ultra-low voltage Intel Pentium M 733 processor offers a 1.1 GHz processor speed, large 2 MB L2 cache, and 400 MHz front-side bus (FSB). (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
  • Memory: The 1 GB of built-in memory is good start for power users, and it offers excellent 533 MHz speed. It has two memory slots, enabling you to add a maximum of 2 GB to handle immersive 3D video games, video editing, and graphics-intensive presentations. Also, to receive the benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
  • CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, this multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data.
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The AV1050-EU1 has a 10.6-inch WXGA widescreen display with AveraBrite technology--providing more brilliant screen for crystal-clear viewing even outdoors--and a 1280 x 768 resolution. It features the Intel Extreme Graphics 2 video card with up to 128 MB of video memory.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The AV1150-EW1 has an integrated 54g wireless LAN (Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG) that's compatible with 802.11b and 802.11g networks. You get a good, but limited selection of connectivity options:

  • 2 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (one Type II card, 32-bit PC CardBus architecture)
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • Stereo headphones/speakers/line-out
  • Microphone/line-out
  • 4-in-1 media reader supports Secure Digital, MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick and Memory Stick PRO
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Professional Edition (which adds Microsoft's IIS Web server, back-up and recovery utilities, Remote Desktop, and other enhanced business features) with Service Pack 2 featuring Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web.

Addressing the increased security needs of the always-connected digital age, this Averatec 1100 Series notebook delivers comprehensive online protection with a trial version of Norton Anti-Virus software. In addition, the 1100 Series includes a trial version of Phoenix FirstWare Recover Pro software that stores user data, applications and the operating system in the secure, host-protected area (HPA) of the hard drive. After the trial period concludes, you still have the factory recovery solution, which can restore the computer to its original factory condition in the event of an unrecoverable virus, worm or malware attack.

Dimensions and Weight
This notebook measures 10.5 x 8 x 1.4 inches (WxDxH) and weighs 3.4 pounds.

Power
The included rechargable lithium-ion battery provides up to 5 hours of battery life (depending on usage).

What's in the Box
This package contains the Averatec AV1150-EW1 notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It's backed by a one-year limited warranty (6 months for the battery).

4.0 out of 5 stars Lightweight laptop at a reasonable cost., November 12, 2006

This review is from: Averatec AV1150-EW1 10.6" Widescreen Notebook PC (Intel Pentium M 733, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, Dual Layer DVD Burner) (Electronics)
The size and weight of the AV1150 are just what I need for travel. Battery life is very good (it is close to as advertised). The keyboard is tight with some keys providing three functions, therefore requiring the use of the function key plus the key with the function. Unfortunately the "*" (asterisk or times function) is the third use of the zero key. The special configuration of the keyboard might present a problem to true touch typists, but for those of use who plod along, it is adequate.

There is minimal software beyond XP Pro preinstalled. No system disks are provided. All factory installed software, including XP Pro, is backed up on a non-Windows partition of the hard drive. This partition is controlled and accessed by Phoenix's FirstWare Recover Pro 2004. The AV1150 comes with a 30 day trial version of Recover Pro 2004. After 30 days, you must register the software for $39.95, or you are greeted with a very loud beep each time the computer is turned on. I was unhappy with the beep, not sure of how Recover Pro 2004 worked, or why I needed to keep it installed. After deleting it to get rid of the annoying beep, I found out Recover Pro is necessary to return the computer to the "as delivered" configuration. Averatec customer support informed me the deletion of the Recover Pro partition of the hard drive is an out-of-warranty event, and I would have to return the laptop for reinstallation of the partition and its contents - all at my expense. If you buy this computer, and I would do it again, and you don't want to pay to register software you didn't even know you were getting, talk to technical support at Phoenix before the 30 day trial period is over and before you delete anything.

I bought this computer for travelling, since I use a desktop in my office and home. The Averatec is perfect for the non power user to take anywhere. Beautiful screen and enough speed for most applications.
