5.0 out of 5 stars One Speedy Laptop
Bought this computer at Sam's club today. I got tired of my old Dell Inspiron 8100 (P3 1.0 ghz) crashing on me and freezing up on me. Never heard from Averatec before but seems like a lot of people buying this brand because of excellent value. This computer is blazingly fast and it is a great deal/price considering all the goods that came with it. DVD burner, a decent...

2.0 out of 5 stars Was great at first... but garbage now!
When I first purchased this laptop from Future Shop I was overjoyed with the performance.

It has been 3 months since, and now it gets extremely hot, the casing has warped all over the place from the heat, and anytime I open any application other than Internet Explorer or try to play music, everything grinds to a halt and then the laptop just turns off! What a...

DVD burner, a decent graphics card and a P4 3.0 ghz. Obviously, I cannot comment on how it compares to other P4 laptops. It is more of a desktop replacement weighing in at 7.7 lbs. The keyboard is quiet and the fan is quiet. Will comment on durability later.

IT IS NOW 5 MONTHS LATER. COMPUTER SHUTS DOWN BY ITSELF FREQUENTLY BECAUSE IT OVERHEATS. I AM DISAPPOINTED WITH THIS PRODUCT: 1 STAR NOW (OUT OF 5).

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazon has wrong specs listed for this model Averatec., October 23, 2004
This review is from: Averatec AV6130HS-20 Laptop (3.00 GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
It has a DVD +/- record DVD drive as the title suggests but the specs have listed otherwise, also its screen is 1280x800, wide format. The photos you get when you click on the above image are also for a different Averatec laptop, although the photo above is correct.

This is the second Averatec laptop that I have purchased and I am happy with what I got for the prices I paid. The cases are a bit cheap and have warped a bit from the heat of normal opertation, otherwise they have performed flawlessly. If they cost more I would have to knock a star or two off, but for this price you cant beat them. Mobile PC magazine had a good review of this exact model which you can read at Averatec's web site, www.averatec.com

3.0 out of 5 stars Power of a desktop, October 16, 2004
This review is from: Averatec AV6130HS-20 Laptop (3.00 GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
I purchased this item and was happy as a lark. The only major dissapointment is the battery life. After a full refresh as described in the manual, I only managed to get one hour and fifteen minutes with general wifi browsing. I was heartbroken and returned it. One other thing, the rubber pads are easy to come off. If all the foot pads are to be lost this would cause poor air circulation leading to overheat and failure. If you are planning to constantly use this machine with a/c power then there is nothing to worry about. It is one of the best deals out there. Tech support speaks American English. Enjoy a great value!

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money and Worst repair facility, July 25, 2005
This review is from: Averatec AV6130HS-20 Laptop (3.00 GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
I bought it in Nov 2005. In winter it gave me really good performance. But in mid of march because of a little hit it started turning off it self. It has really big problem with over heating. One day smoke was coming from laptop keyboard. Before I react it was burnt out. I sent it back to averatec and they return me after replacing motherboard. It worked perfectly for an hour. As soon as plugged it to chrge battery once again smoke was coming out of it. This time I was fast enough to disconnect AC power supply. Averatec gave me a new RMA and ( and ) Returned my laptop after 1 Month ( 1 whole month) even though I sent it back my self without waiting for free shipping offered by Averatec. After getting it back I have got wired keyboard. Key board is really hard. I am using computer for 8-10 hours in a day from last 6 years. This is the worst keyboard I have ever used. I thought "I will get soft after using for couple of weeks". But I was wrong. I started lossing display. LCD screen started turning off itself and I have to shake it so it comes up again. What a laptop. ( Is it from 80's or before that?)
I don't know what to do with this piece of crap.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just OK -- and that's if your into fixing things !, May 29, 2005
This review is from: Averatec AV6130HS-20 Laptop (3.00 GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
Averatec notebooks are a crapshoot.
They are either great or garbage. I managed a really good price on mine and still feel cheated.
Tech supports answer to my issues was "send it back" and this was right out of the box .
Lucky for me my husband is pretty handy with computers and had the problems identified and fixed in about an hour. (replaced memory and optical drive).
His description of this laptop "a desktop crammed into a small case without any ventilation" and some other things I won't put in print . Would I buy another Averatec ? I don't think so .

5.0 out of 5 stars Review after over one year of running perfectly, August 1, 2006
This review is from: Averatec AV6130HS-20 Laptop (3.00 GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
I bought my notebook over a year ago in the US, travelled with my new notebook oversees and even moved back to Germany never having a problem. After a year my only concern is the fact that it runs hot if I am working longer than 8 hours a day with it (university use, programming) but I solved this little problem of mine with an additional fan pad you plug in via USB port. I never had problems with speed, noise, storage or capacity. The start of Windows was slow after a year of usage but I used RegSeeker and now it works like a brand new notebook. It still looks new, no scratches, dents or anything.
I m very satisfied and recommend this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value for the Money, July 26, 2006
This review is from: Averatec AV6130HS-20 Laptop (3.00 GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
PROS...
I bought at Sam's 8-25-04 and have had NO PROBLEMS. It does run hot, but I put a plastic kitchen grill drip tray upside down under the back so it gets plenty of air circulation and never had a problem with it overheating. I just upgraded my memory to 2GB and it's still running smoothly.
CONS...
Rubber pads fall off on the bottom, and the battery life is only an hour and half at best. I think it runs a little loud but have nothing to compare it with.
STILL A LOT OF BANG FOR THE BUCK!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Value for money, May 18, 2005
This review is from: Averatec AV6130HS-20 Laptop (3.00 GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
Ok, for the price, you can't do much better than this. It's probably the best laptop boasting a 3ghz CPU and DVD-RW capability. I do wish it offered an 80GB drive, but the RADEON chipset makes up for it. If you're shopping around, you should consider it. [...]
You'll be pleased.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Averatec AV6130HS-20 Laptop (3.00 GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB Hard Drive, DVD+/-RW Drive) (Personal Computers)
I read the reviews, it looks like a good deal. But it is the little things that get you. I glued the rubber feet on so I would not loose them. I made sure there is good air flow to the fan. No problems with overheating. I have been having problems with it freezing when playing games or DVD's. Tech support was beyond useless. The battery has so little life I wonder if they sent me an old used battery. The screen is great, the speed is good (as expected). I have been using it for almost 2 months. UPDATE 5 months, I took it on a road trip across the country, it worked great and never overheated. The only thing I have a problem with is the freezing when playing some games like Sims 2. Overall it is a solid 3 star, it gets the job done.
