Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Enjoy your favorite music and video wherever you roam with the Averatec AV7115-EH1 multimedia notebook PC, which features a bright 17-inch LCD screen that looks great even in direct sunlight. But in addition delivering an outstanding digital entertainment experience, it also provides high-performance processing designed to handle todayÕs demanding business applications. It's powered by the battery sipping 1.8 GHz Mobile AMD Sempron 3000+ processor. Other features include an 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), dual-layer DVD burner, 5-in-1 memory card reader, ultra-fast Gigabit Ethernet, and Microsoft XP Home edition.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 80 GB hard drive (4200 RPM) has become the average size for notebook PCs, but lower than found in comparable multimedia-centric notebooks. It provides enough capacity for storing documents, digital media files, and productivity software.
  • Processor: A lower-end cousin to AMD's XP processor line, the 1.8 GHz Mobile AMD Sempron 3000+ found in this notebook is speedy enough for everyday computing needs and running office productivity software, but won't be quite enough for higher-end video editing or 3D gaming. This processor features AMD's Cool'n'Quiet Technology, which conserves power while also keeping the notebook's decibels to a minimum. It also features up to a 1600 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and a 128 KB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
  • Memory: The 512 MB of installed RAM (333 MHz) is enough to get you started, but you'll want to add more RAM to handle today's demanding multimedia and productivity suites. It has a 2 GB maximum RAM capacity.
  • CD/DVD Drive: The multi-format, dual-layer DVD burner enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc. It will also burn your favorite music mixes to CD.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook offers a standard-sized 84-key keyboard with an 19mm pitch and 2.5mm stroke. It also has a Synaptics touchpad with 2-way virtual scroll.
Screen
The 17-inch LCD screen offers Averatec's proprietary AveraBrite technology, which helps keep things bright and readable even in direct sunlight, and it has a 1440 x 900-pixel widescreen, high-definition resolution. Video is powered by the ATI Radeon XPress 200M IGP video/graphics card, which delivers good, though not high-end, 3D graphics. It provides 128 MB of dedicated video RAM. ATI's HyperMemory technology allows the chipset to run in either Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) mode or with dedicated frame buffer memory to enhance graphics performance.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The AV7115-EH1 has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's fully compatible with 802.11b/g wireless networks. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (in addition to a standard PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a basic offering of connectivity options, which does not include FireWire:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals (1 in front, 1 in rear)
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video port
  • 5-in-1 memory card reader, compatible with Memory Stick, Memory Stick Pro, Secure Digital, MultiMedia, and XD cards
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes with a full trial version of Phoenix FirstWare Recover Pro software that stores user data, applications and the operating system in the secure, host-protected area (HPA) of the hard drive. Other preloaded software titles include Cyberlink DVD Solution 4, ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite (30-day trial), and Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Dimensions and Weight
Easily portable for a media-centric notebook, it measures 15.5 x 10.9 x 1.4 inches (WxDxH) and weighs just 7.2 pounds.

What's in the Box
This package contains the Averatec AV7115-EH1 notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It is backed by a one-year limited hardware warranty and a 6-month battery warranty.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad customer service, September 10, 2006
By
Manan (Baltimore, MD) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Averatec AV7115-EH1 17" Laptop (Mobile AMD Sempron 3000+, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, Dual Layer DVD Burner) (Personal Computers)
Pros: Price, Screen size, Full size keyboard

Cons: It comes with toll free number for assistance. Every time you call them you get to speak with hard headed rude and purely unprofessional customer service executive.

It does not come with any recovery disc. You have to create one by your self as soon as you start using your system.

No user manual except pdf file loaded on hard drive with is really unintuitive and useless. After scrolling through so many pages you never find what you are looking for.

If you play game for more then 20 min it gets really hot.

Over all its not a bad deal if you don't need any help from customer service, can do without recovery disc and user manual and don't play games.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very functional, not much software, no whistles or bells., January 12, 2008
AVERATEC AVERATEC AMD 1.8GHZ 80GB 512MB DVDRW XPH 17"

I purchased this new notebook from RCS Experience on Amazon for 599.99, and also ordered 512ram of PC2700 on Amazon on 1/2008. This Averatec is very functional. It is the coolest running of my notebooks because the cooling fan runs constantly. It doesn't cycle on and off, so you will here it make a whirring noise which not bothersome. The speakers are adequate but can be tweaked to your liking with the Realtec audio manager. Audio jacks are directly in front so you can use your headset for better quality. The screen is clear with some reflection, and can also be tweaked for brightness on the keyboard. The key board is comfortable with a number pad. The 5-in-1 card reader works good. XP home is the operating system and works reliably, but extra memory is needed because the video takes 40MB from the total memory. No recovery discs come with this computer. You restart the computer tap the F4 key during boot-up and boom the Phoenix recovery system asks you what do you want to do next. It works slick. There is an icon on the desktop so you can create a recovery DVD. This computer is not very rugged so I use it for a desktop replacement despite its thinness, and light weight. It is made in China. I have spoken by phone to Averatec tech support about some user issues and was able to get hold of someone quickly early in the morning when they open. Hours 8:00AM to 5:00 central time M-F. I have heard they are slow about returning serviced computers. Bottom line this is a fully functional computer without much software or bells and whistles, like you would see on an HP. If you want to keep it cheap this notebook might be worth considering.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value, September 14, 2006
This review is from: Averatec AV7115-EH1 17" Laptop (Mobile AMD Sempron 3000+, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, Dual Layer DVD Burner) (Personal Computers)
This laptop has everything I could reasonably need for my non-gaming lifestyle. It is a bit bare inside the box, but if you're reasonablly familiar with laptops already, this should be fine. The screen is HUGE and beautiful. DVD burner works nice, and comes with pre-installed burning software. I like the video capabilities, many USB 2 ports, and even a nice firewire port! For $650 total, this is a great deal!
