Decent imaging, but limited color depth., January 5, 2005
This review is from: Avermedia PC/Mac-to-TV Averkey Imicro Scan Converter 1024 x 768 No Flicker (Personal Computers)
The averkey iMicro is a decent, entry level scan converter, but it has some drawbacks.
First and most problematic is the fact that the A/D/A conversion has a limited color depth. For high contrast scenes this isn't much of an issue. For scenes with subtle color variances, like the blue sky, there is noticable blotching and blockyness due the unit's limited color pallette. The limited color pallete also detracts from the picture's sharpness.
Second the maximum brightness of the picture is a bit dimmer than standard. This unit lacks a brightness adjustment.
Third, the amount of zoom is fixed to one value, and makes the assumption that the pixel aspect should be square. As a result, the aspect ratio can be severly distorted during zoom.
There is no remote control offered for this model.
Despite the limited color depth, color accuracy is excellent. There is no color bleeding, smearing or crosstalk. Averkey built their video circuits properly. Video output options are SCART, SVHS, and composite video. I had to adjust the blue gamma value of my video card to do a slight color temperature correction, but it could be just a quirk of my video card.
Flicker can easily be eliminated via the "sharpness button". Despite the button's name it really doesn't change the picture sharpness, only the amount of flicker. There about 4 different overscan settings which are sufficient for my purposes.
Overall, this card is good for many scan conversion purposes, like displaying web pages, playing older emulated video games and etc, where complex color depth and extremely bright images are not required. This unit will NOT output DVD quality video. Those expecting DVD quality video will be dissapointed.

I purchased this for my classroom and really enjoyed it but it only lasted for two months. I purchased it during the summer so by the time it stopped working in October, it was too late to return it.
