Book Description

January 1, 1997 Occasional papers series
Majid Fakhry's booklet "Averroes, Aquinas, and the Rediscovery of Aristotle in Western Europe" delves into ancient philosophical thought and its more modern dimensions. In his booklet, not only does Fakhry provide the reader with some of the more historical aspects of Aristotelian philosophy, but also expounds upon the ways in which later commentators such as Averroes (Ibn Rushd) and Aquinas have impacted both philosophical and theological thought. The ideas elaborated upon include being and essence, divine providence, the unity of the intellect, and the eternity of the world. As well, Fakhry provides some speculation regarding the impact that such philosophic thought has had on both the Christian and the Muslim faiths.
