Book Description

July 5, 2011
In homage to the pulp fiction and hard boiled detective dime store novels of the 1950's and 1960's, Tony Faville brings us a new look on those stories of the past.

It is 1959, in New York City, the Cold War is in full bloom, and the Red Scare is everywhere. Private Investigator Avery Nolan is hired by the daughter of a missing research scientist to find him. What he finds instead is the KGB, a possible government coverup, and the undead ready to tear the United States apart from the inside.

Editorial Reviews

Review

This is an absolutely engaging noir detective tale. Avery is a well-developed character and the author draws you into the story from the start. The violence is handled with finesse, making the story appropriate for a wider-aged audience than many current horror tales. You can't go wrong with this one! Anna Lowther - Smashwords

From the Author

Okay, here's the deal, Avery Nolan is a Lucky Strike smoking, scotch drinking, hard fighting, straight shooting private investigator from New York City. Sure, he takes his lumps every now and then, but he is always the first in line when payback is due.

Add in your desired side characters, including plenty of dames with great gams, cops that are willing to bend the law slightly for a friend, and a hot librarian and you get an idea as to where I am headed with the story.

Fact is, I had a heck of a lot of fun writing the story and hope that you will have as much fun reading it.

Not What I Expected January 30, 2012
Format:Paperback
Avery Nolan was not what I expected at all; the title led me to believe that this would be a humorous undead tale about a detective, Dick Tracy-style, but, instead, this was a serious and elaborate crime/mystery/thriller with zombies. Granted, there was not a lot of undead action (I would have liked more zombie scenes), but I love that Faville was willing to go back to the 1950s Cold War Era for an outbreak setting.

Avery Nolan is a private detective hired to find a missing scientist. The scientist was working on a reanimation experiment to help soldiers. Both the FBI and the KGB are involved, but I don't want to risk ruining the story by discussing that angle any further. Even with the emphasis on the crime drama and intrigue, there are touching moments whenever Avery is among his friends and daily acquaintances. I liked that Avery could be moved by little things, and wasn't just strolling through the story as some tough-guy working a case. It's Avery's POV that provides the novel's engaging quality. Allow yourself some time to get into the plot, and you'll understand.

I don't usually care for first person stories, but this one held my interest all the way. The whole story flowed smoothly and the main character was well-developed. I was expecting something a bit different from the title however. The zombie part seemed like just an after thought, and I would like to have seen more emphasis on that part because the story didn't have much to do with the title. Altogether an enjoyable read.

From [...] November 5, 2011
Format:Paperback
In Tony Faville's second book, he does a fantastic job at grabbing readers from two separate genres, classic crime and zombies! It also would be enjoyable for those of us who enjoys a good conspiracy story. The story itself is well written and tells of an ex GI and ex police officer who is now a detective who seems tough as nails, but like all good 50's detectives, has a softer side. It goes into a cold-war conspiracy, the regeneration of the dead, and has a whole world of corruption as a big red cherry on top of this crime drama sunday. I love how we get to know who Avery Nolan is and what makes him this way without ever being bored. The most remarkable part of the whole novella (just around 120 pages, making it a quick and easy read) is how true Tony stays in keeping that 50's noir theme throughout the entire story (in fact, the term "Zombie" is never used since it really wasn't around back then...instead, they are called "Ghouls", which I think adds that extra layer of realness). Overall, Avery Nolan: Private Dick of the Dead is a great fast-paced noir book with great ghoulish undertones and a sense of humor mixed in with the action and suspense. Think Dick Tracy mixed with Resident Evil!
