This review is from: Avery Perforated Mailing Seals, Clear, 480 per Pack (05248) (Office Product)
I publish an annual catalog as a brochure that is 4 letter side pages, stapled, folded and sealed. This year I ran out of the seals I had been using, 3/4" clear perforated ones that were stuck on a letter size page. They needed to be scraped off the page and stuck on and it was a pain to bend the sheet so my fingernail could scrape the next one off. The new seals by Avery are designed so you tear off the backing and can pull them off easily with half the seal exposed. Just finished my run of 1200 catalogs so I have had a lot of time to think about this product!
These seals are 1 inch in diameter with a dotted line perforation down the middle. You bend the seal over at the perforation to close the item but the perf allows it to snap open fairly easily when received by the customer. The set up of the Avery labels is 5 down and 3 across. You put your fingers at a designated spot on the seals card and pull apart, leaving half of the seal exposed so it can be put on your finger and transferred to the booklet. Since I do this a lot I can put one on each finger and do 4 booklets in 2 seconds each and am then ready to do the next batch. The problem is that the 5X3 format always leaves at least one seal exposed and you have to set down the card upside down or the exposed seal with stick to the table or counter. Another issue is tearing off the backing requires a very specific motion to do it correctly. Otherwise one or more of the seals tears off with the backing and you have to put both sides upside down to avoid sticking to the counter! A couple of times my tearing motion left some paper on the back of the seal which made it hard to stick to the brochure. As I got more experience I was doing it right nearly all the time but had some waste along the way. Speaking of which, the backing is about 95% of the total package and I felt like I was making a lot of trash and only using a tiny part of the product. My footprint wasn't really too green with these seals. On the whole, I like these seals and will continue to use them because they are so fast and save time. I wish they would change to setup to 4X4 to solve the problem of open seals laying on the counter. They also cost more than other seals but the time saving is worth it.
