Book Description

September 1, 2007
Edward Talbot isn't inclined to accept the global pardon offered to pirates by Nassau's new governor. Being a pirate is the only thing he's ever succeeded at. Fate, however, has other plans, and as one misadventure leads to another, all of them seemingly involved with Arleigh Avery and her putative treasure map, he discovers there may be more to recommend the life of an honest man than he thought.

More About the Author

Kate Dolan writes award-winning historical fiction and romance under her own name and contemporary mysteries and children's books under the name K.D. Hays. A professional writer since 1992, Kate has written everything from legal analysis to a weekly newspaper column on religion.

Historical Novels Review praises her "humor and unusual characters that crackle off the page," Midwest Book Review finds her tales "riveting," and historians admire her research and reconstruction of places and manners of bygone eras. Drawing on local color for inspiration, she sets many of her stories in Maryland.

Her most recent novel, The Appearance of Impropriety, won The 2010 Written Art Award for humorous fiction. For her next release, she worked in partnership with her eleven-year-old daughter to create Toto's Tale -- the "real" story of the Wizard of Oz from Toto's point of view.

Although Kate earned a law degree and passed the bar (as her husband says, "the only bar she ever passed without entering,") she has actually spent more time working with preschool children than with lawyers. Of the two groups, she prefers children because "if they have something bad to say, they'll say it to your face."

She loves to explore the past by visiting historic sites and engaging in living history demonstrations and experiments. She also tries to spend as much time as possible riding roller coasters and waterslides with her kids, which can be just as educational. For example, last summer they learned exactly what not to put in your pocket when you riding El Toro at Six Flags.

When not writing and riding coasters, Kate enjoys singing, dancing, jump rope, and taking long walks with her two dogs. She shares her office with Downy, a mini-rex rabbit who likes to gnaw on reference books.

It's harder to turn a new leaf than one would think. "Avery's Treasure" is the story of Pirate Edward Talbot. Pardoned, he's offered the chance to abandon his ways and live the life of an honest man. He finds it hard to resist, and continues in his ways, but soon finds that perhaps he should have taken it when he had the chance. "Avery's Treasure" is a riveting tale of historical fiction, sure to please.

I'm not usually a reader of romances, but I'm glad I made an exception in this case. "Avery's Treasure" is just that--a delightful story with wonderful twists in the plot that keep you guessing all the way through. I most enjoyed the characters, and their interactions with each other. They were anything but predictable. There is plenty of good humor which exists along side of the disasters the characters continually get into. Because the author does such a good job on setting the visual scene, I feel this would make an excellent movie.

Fun and adventure June 15, 2008

I had no idea what was going to happen next with this one. But it didn't really matter because I had so much fun with the characters snapping at each other all the time - very funny. This is a great story when you're in the mood for action, adventure and nothing serious.
