I have not received this item yet, thought thought that I would let others know that this is cheaper from the makers website and you can additionally use the coupon code TheChickenChick with the caps for another 10% off making it around $65ish. just a heads up!

This is the first prodect I've owned by brinsea, and I am extremly impressed!!

I recieved mine in about a week and a half ago, a day before a few (shipped) serama and d'uccle eggs hatched. Immediantly upon recieving, I took the brooder out of the box and set it up in the 20 gal aqurium that I use for my chicks. It fit nicely, there was plenty of extra space in the tank for the chicks to move around it easily as well as a chick feeder and waterer. I was surprised at the amount of heat put out - the brooder stays perfectly warm underneath, yet stays cool to the touch. No fears of fires unlike my typical lights, and no fears of the chicks somehow getting burned. Another perk is how little electricity it uses!! A heat lamp may have an inital smaller out of pocket cost, however if you plan to hatch a lot of chicks the EcoGlo booder will save you money in the long run.

I had 5 chicks total that hatched and went under the EcoGlow brooder. I also had 9 (larger) olive egger chicks hatch that went in a similar tank, but under a heat lamp. Things I noticed:

Chicks under the EcoGlo:
-more active
-more playful
-less stressed
-eat/drink better
-healthy, happy appearance

Chicks under heat lamp:
-seemed to have trouble finding appropriate level of heat - they typically were huddled together in a corner
-all chicks were healthy after hatch, hours after transfer to tank with light one of the chicks became lethargic and died
-low levels of movement/activity

These are just a few things I noticed from just one hatch, and so far am happy and impressed. I hope to one day aquire more of these brooders (especially the larger ones) as well as a Brinsea incubator!

I bought this instead of a heat lamp because my dad is a fire investigator and I grew up listening to horror stories. Now that we have successfully completed our brood, I think I can give an accurate review. First, the safety factor is off the charts. You can put your hand on the warming base and not get burned. We set peeps up in a plastic swimming pool with a puppy kennel around the outside to keep them in, which worked great. There is a cord but the chicks never paid it much attention and I am sure you could get creative hiding it or something. Second, the chicks LOVED hiding under it and we have dozens of pictures of them peeking out from under it. We also set it vertically so we could watch them and they just stuck close to the "wall" of heat we made while we took more pictures. You could almost see the determination as they attempted to be the first to get on top of the yellow platform. A quick explanation of the Brooder. It is basically three pieces, two sides with three levels and a yellow/black platform. The heat comes from the black side and the yellow side is what you see on top which is not hot (maybe slightly warm from being near the heat is all) The platform clicks into one of the three levels on the sides and you are good to go. As our peeps grew it was pretty easy to unclick the platform from the sides and move it up. I think our chicks were much more adventurous because they had a "hiding place" to run back under when they were startled or scared. They also self regulated their temperature, with the smaller chicks staying under and the larger ones moving out or farther away when they wanted. It is very stable and it was not unusually to see one chick perched on the side piece and it never tipped or seemed unstable.Read more ›

I love this product. At first had a 250 Watts red bulb, but this chicks, now 8 days old, were very restless at night as this bulb is rather bright. Switched into this little brooder and they sleep like magic. I'm not sure how this brooder would work in the cold room or the barn,
the red bulb might warm a bigger area, but in a warm room it's a perfect solution.
Bought directly from their website (much cheaper)

I've been using mine for 2 weeks.

17 watts? compared to a 250 watt heater bulb and considerable less of a fire hazard.

No bright lite keeping the chicks awake when they have been stressed from shipping.

Took them no time at all to figure out where warm was. Their first night the outside temperature was 51 degrees F and the chicks were just as happy as little pooping machines can be.

They are now 2 weeks old and I raised the yellow heater part up on notch on the legs.

I have now used this product for a season of rearing chicks and I am 100% satisfied with my purchase. The traditional heat lamps are a very real fire hazard and expensive to run. At only 18 Watts/hour the EcoGlow provides plenty of warmth without danger of being too hot and allows the chicks to experience natural cycles of dark and light.

One word of caution, for the unit to provide the necessary amount of heat it must be placed in a space with temperatures no lower than 52° F.

Although markedly more expensive than the traditional heat lamp, this brooder is certainly worth the peace of mind.
