This review is from: Avid BB5 Road Ball Bearing Bicycle Disc Brake (160mm, Front or Rear) (Sports)
If you want an inexpensive disc brake it is hard to beat the Avid BB5. The only difference from the BB7 is that the pads are a little less grabby on the BB5.

I'm not a hardcore cyclist, but maybe a little harder than the average dept. store bike rider. When I put a new fork on my Walmart bike, I needed a new brake as the "Sun" brand crapomatic disc brake that came with the bike wouldn't fit the new fork's beefier brake bracket.
Out comes the credit card, and a couple days later my Avid BB5 brake showed up. Packaged nicely, excellent quality and finish and fit on everything. Easy to install, overall everything about it has been very good. MAKE SURE TO CLEAN THE DISC AFTER INSTALLING IT, AND BEFORE YOUR FIRST RIDE! My experience with the original "Sun" disc on this bike was pretty bad.. useless when dirty, almost useless when clean. The Avid BB5 is still useless when dirty but holy cow it works awesome when it's clean!!!! Very good stopping power, very easy to lock up the front wheel on dry dirt or lift the rear tire while stopping on pavement, with just a little bit of pressure on the handle. If there is a better brake than this, I don't need it. But it is sorta tedious to keep the disc clean, I guess that's true with any bicycle disc brake. |
