This review is from: Avid MC Transport, Artist Series (Electronics)
While its called the "AVID" MC Transport, my unit was stamped with the old name Euphonix. The Avid logo shows up after powering up the unit. This AVID MC Transport is really for professional editors with the patience to learn how to set it up and program the soft keys. I am editing in the controversial Final Cut Pro X, a platform that was not supposed to be supported, which at first was very disappointing because the build quality and feel of the unit is superb. The Jog and Shuttle Dial has the perfect feel for scrubbing through tons of video when working on a big project. All of the buttons light up when being used except, oddly enough...the power button, which is the same as all the other round soft buttons.
It comes packed in a well padded box which you will want to keep for transporting the unit if needed.
If setting the unit up matched its build quality I would have given it 5 stars. Fortunately, this unit can be used with FCPX! But there is a trick to it that was not explained in the PDF Manual. You have to go into your System Preferences(Mac) and select the Eucon Badge whichEu will open the Eucon Preferences window. You will see a command to "Drag Applications into the list". And you literally have to do just that. Open up your applications folder and drag the FCPX Icon into that window and FCPX will work. Before figuring this out I contacted AVID about it and they informed me it was not compatible with FCPX. But I was not convinced and after getting it to work I emailed them again and they asked me how I did it!
And after launching the Transport, I noticed the Jog and Shuttle dial did not work. But after messing around some more I discovered you have to press the two soft key buttons to the far left just above the Dial and it all works fine. Quite well in fact. And its still a little fickle when you boot your computer up. The software that drives the unit starts automatically, but when you turn the unit on it may not seem to be responsive. And its not. At the top of your computer(Mac) click on the EuControl button (EuControl Settings, not to be confused with EuControl Preferences, like I said..confusing) and wait.... you will see a window and a message that will say "Not able to connect." Click ok and another window will be there and to the left you will see your unit, click on it and then click "Add' and your unit will be active and ready to go. And one more thing, before doing anything update the Unit and the Software. You will see an option to click in the same EuControl settings window.
While the default setting on the AVID MC Transport work fine I do want to change some of them. But after briefly reading how to do it, it is to say the least not something I am looking forward to.
As you can see setting up the AVID MC Transport can be very tricky, but when you get it up and running using this unit is really nice. The AVID MC Transport is very comfortable and a real pleasure to use and makes reviewing, cutting and editing video much easier. But AVID needs to recognize the need for a complete overhaul on the Software and Setup of what is otherwise the best hardware for for what it does on the market at a very reasonable price. And it looks cool as heck!!!!
