I've been a Sibelius user since version 5, having cross-graded from Finale after managing and researching its crashes, bugs, and user interface problems became a part-time job by itself. At the same time I switched to Mac platform with Logic Pro and Apogee audio hardware, on the advice of a studio pro colleague, and together with Sibelius 5, enjoyed a nearly glitch-free studio for about three years. The upgrade to Sibelius 6 was also smooth.

The new Sibelius 7 reminds me of my days with Finale and PCs: it crashes almost every session during all manner of operations, including simple ones as saving and printing. Exporting to PDF crashes 4 times out of 5. Even saving to previous versions crashes often, so that some projects are temporarily useless. The installation seems to have disabled Sibelius 6 to the point where ReWire with Logic will no longer work, and the Sound Essentials work only intermittently. Often error message boxes have no actual text - revealing that some error scenarios were not anticipated and coded. Yes, I have all the OS and program updates. And to be certain the problems were not on my end, I performed a completely clean OS X Lion install (which I have never once found necessary on a Mac), and all problems remained.

I am quite certain that if I devoted time and energy to tracking down every glitch and bug with tech support, user forums, etc., I would learn there are good solutions somewhere to all of these problems. I am also certain that Avid is working furiously on the next update that will fix all of this.

The problem? Knowing the time and energy drain of lower-end solutions, I now choose my technology precisely to avoid all of that.

Sibelius 7 is BY FAR the worst software program I have ever used. Every single time I try to open or use this software I am met with user interface hell and little bugs with no explanation that come and go for seemingly no reason at all.

If I had downloaded this application for free I would be insulted that someone even wasted my time with it, but the fact that I paid a hefty price to "upgrade" from Sibelius 4 makes me sick.

Please do not buy this product and support their madness. No wonder AVID laid off the entire dev team and only holds onto the product by a shoe string.

I ordered Sibelius 7 for school, being a music composition major and it being a requirement for a class. Before, I had just used a free notation software, MuseScore. Though switching between the products was a wee bit of a hassle, once I got used to Sibelius, I absolutely love it. My only complaint is that it seems to crash a bit. I suggest saving your scores every once in a while as you write them in order to not lose your work. Other than that, Sibelius 7 is a fine, sleek way to write down your music.

I went from Sibelius first to Sibelius 7.5, the latest update, my desktop doesn't like it at all but eventually got it to work on my laptop, and after a couple minutes of writing i have noticed something the audio is so much worse, literally every single instrument sounds far worse and more fake than anything did before the update, the piano sounds pretty ok but that is literally it. if you want to score music, this will be the bare minimum you need, if you want to even pass the music as decent background for a recreational user, don't get this software. it's over priced for giving you less features.

This is a very robust program, a great tool for the trained musician. The only drawback is that the user manual that comes on pdf is a bit sketchy. It takes time and experimentation to find some of the functions and how to get them to work (ie. glissandi).
I bought the program to digitize a theatrical score and it produced a recorded score suitable for performance on stage.

Although pricey, it is a few hundred dollars less on Amazon than buying directly from Avid.
